Yeah this is amazing.

It's grown on me somewhat. Might potentially go up to 4 with a few more listens (so even with agalloch's worst LP)

Had the chance to see them play this from start to finish and it certainly did not disappoint. They sounded very tight live, and they had a great atmosphere throughout their set. John had some excellent ebow and looping moments that sounded amazing live. A great debut album in my opinion and I hope they exceed my expectations in the future.

Still impatient to hear the new project the rest of the Agalloch guys are working on!

Vaguely excited about it but let's face it, it won't be as good as this.

Hoping it'll be even better

Interesting stuff (it's a sound-off that amused me, by the way)...
'The Agalloch comparisons are inevitable and ultimately impossible to avoid so let's make a terrible beer analogy out of it. Agalloch = KBS; a legendary barrel aged stout with complexity, absolute superb craftsmanship shown in every aspect of the brewing process while remaining incredibly approachable for any beer drinker. Each sip of the drinking experience is bliss. Pillorian = New Holland Dragon's Milk; a good barrel aged stout for sure but one that lacks the true artistry to make it a classic that drinkers will return to it over and over again. Dragon's Milk is not trying to be KBS just like Pillorian is not trying to be new Agalloch but at the same time they are so intertwined in the same realm that one must and should compare them.'
P.S. This is pencilled in for some January listening.

I have no problem with comparing them. I just feel like most people take one sip, wrinkle their nose, say 'this tastes different' then go back to KBS without even letting the aftertaste resolve, or even register for that matter.

Please see the P.S. bit.
Yeah I just thought it was a rather odd & personal analogy, it'll have no relevance to the vast majority of people. Maybe that guy just likes posting sound-offs for his own amusement. As a beer lover myself it also came across as rather elitist, especially when that's not the subject matter they were apparently supposed to be discussing.
I realise this has descended into a severe case of overthinking.

Most Agalloch fans (and bm fans really) are pretty elitist I've noticed, so it's not all that weird. But that's just me. He's not wrong either, the two bands are separate yet intrinsically related, and so demand comparison, even if that comparison is categorically detrimental in that it seems to lead many Agalloch fans to be blinded by it and not evaluate the album on its own merits. Anyway talk to you sometime in January then

he's wrong about Dragon's Milk too
seriously the only song that sticks out to me on this is A Stygian Pyre, made even better if you count The Sentient Arcanum as part of it.
everything else is like "yeah ok whatever"
