This is excellent but might actually be my least favorite of his full-length releases, only b/c Alchemy and Manafon keep growing on me. One of the best discogs ever.

Even if I don't like the discog as much as you lads I really can't disagree with that statement.

I haven't delve into much of Sylvian's discography (including some of the Japan albums), but this, Secrets Of The Beehive and Dead Bees On A Cake are the three that I really enjoy. I consider the latter one of my favorite albums ever.

I figured as such considering I've started w/Secrets Of The Beehive and stopped at this album. Might as well keep that forward momentum going instead of taking a detour back to his earlier albums (which I haven't heard yet either), haha.

yeah, forward is the way to go

Brilliant/Alchemy/Gone to Earth are fantastic but I feel like those album's sound contrast greatly to what he did from Beehive onwards.

imo this and Manafon are each completely different directions that came out of nowhere compared to his 20th century output. I hear some similarities between Brilliant Trees and Beehive, especially in the rhythm sections. Gone to Earth and Alchemy are more their own things that really indulge in warm, mystical ambience, especially in each album's second halves.

After finally hearing this in full without pauses it's probably in between Trees and Beehive for me. First impressions is that this is really good but is a tad underdeveloped and the songs like The Good Son kinda mess with the atmosphere the album has. Not as cohesive as what would come later. Blemish, The Only Daughter and Late Night Shopping are so satisfying and I think A Fire in the Forest could grow into a personal fav over time but for now, the t/t is the best here.

Yeah when i was listening to this last night I felt kinda similar about The Good Son and How Little We Need to be Happy. Where the songs on Manafon have an awareness of texture, the improvised instrumentation on this is just aimless noodling.

Those three songs you mentioned are my favs too

Blemish, The Heart Knows Better, and Fire in the Forest are my favs. Fans of this who haven't heard Trauma or For the Love of Life should check them out, they're two great bonus tracks from this time period.

For The Love Of Life is objectively one of David Sylvian’s finest songs ever. Used as the ending song for the anime Monster of all things...

Another lost gem song of his is Wasn’t I Joe? which was only performed live once at a show in Japan. This show and the performance of the track is easy to find on YouTube actually.

"which was only performed live once at a show in Japan"

it was performed throughout the Blemish tour, to be exact

Oh, I see. I had no idea. From what I knew, that 2004 Japan show was the only performance of it that I saw and knew to exist. It makes sense now actually that he'd perform it for the entire Blemish tour. Thanks for the correction!

No problem, afaik there's not too many performances from the tour circulating outside of the Japan performance and another one from October 2003.

Pretty much my thoughts Jas. I'm not a fan of Trauma but For the Love of Life is incredible. Did it make it onto any pressings of Blemish?

I'm pretty sure it's only on volume 1 of the Monster soundtrack if you absolutely had to have it on physical lol

seems kinda odd that it never ended up on Victim of Stars or anything like that

Only Trauma made it onto any pressings of Blemish (to the best of my knowledge, only on the Japanese imports and the UK vinyl pressing), For the Love of Life was most likely recorded after Blemish and if not, it saw release a year after the album came out.

Either he forgot about it himself or it’s tied up with whomever put out the Monster soundtrack.
