"The Things We Do hits you right in the chest no matter what age you are, vividly portraying that angst-ridden part of us that never really grows up."
Exactly the reason why I 4 this despite Throaways, Noisy Heaven, I Break Guitars, Hard Luck Kid and Dirty Lights being quite samey (50% of the album!), at least on the first couple of listens. They use the same rhythmic structure and stuff but give them time and you'll find something special on each, but yeah still samey (the beginnings in particular). Production also adds a lot to the described feel you get from listening to this. Excellent album.

Thanks Arcade! I hear that a lot which I'm not sure as to whether it's a good thing or bad thing lol.
This is most likely in my top 10 for the year, although judging by the comments it sounds like that will be an outlying opinion.

downer's review of this on cokemachineglow is perfect

Gonna check this out just for the album title, which is hands down, the best of the year.

Curious what you'll think, Voivod.
I know some feel it is superficial, but it never hit me from that angle. There's an element to this that just makes me feel like I can do anything, and it keeps me coming back. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if this worked its way into my end of year top 10.

This is fun & I actually prefer most of these tunes to their EP tracks.

To me these sounded mostly like rehashed versions of the EP songs

Wonder how to handle the fact if you didn't listen to the EP's before. I mean...if I had, maybe this record would sound way too rehashed but since I don't know the EP's it doesn't, which in turn affects my positive rating. But the EP's are still there and were released before this record so...just wondering how to manage a "proper" rating.

There's no proper way to like an album
I heard none of the EPs and I'm not even worried about it

But what if a band has 10 similiar sounding records and you listen to the new ones first and like them and then rate the older ones lower because they're the same although it should be the other way round

People get introduced to bands through different albums
I get what you're trying to say but there's no real point in worrying about it. I may go back and listen to the EPs - might like 'em more, might like 'em less - but that's what makes each individual's experience with a band unique. It's why there's diversity in taste. It's just being human and not a robot who forces themselves to listen to every discography of every band they ever hear.
Who cares what gets rated and when and how high or low, as long as you're finding music you enjoy and following that feeling wherever it takes you
