One of my all time favourite post-punk albums (#2 to be exact, and that means much because it is one of my most important genres).

I have the version with the bonus tracks (Get Down Parts I & II and Let's Panic Later are great bonus songs).

Only Virus Meadow by my all time favourite band And Also The Trees is better (for me) but I love how varied 154 is. And released in 1979, it could almost have been released decades later and would have sound fresh enough.

And yes 154 has classic written over it, even if it isn't perfect (that's often the case with experimental stuff).

When I've first downloaded this record it came without A Touching Display, for some reason. Years later when I was hearing 154 again ATD came up to my surprise and it just floored me. It was as if the track was a monster hybernating that finally decided to show up.

At that moment I started to consider this to be their best record.

Favourite songs:

1. A Touching Display

2. 40 Versions

3. The 15th

4. A Mutual Friend

5. Get Down (Parts I & II)

6. Once Is Enough

7. I Should Have Known Better

8. The Other Window

9. Map Ref. 41°N 93°W

10. Blessed State

11. Two People In A Room

12. Let's Panic Later

13. Indirect Enquiries

Very tough to do that with this album, even my #2 post-punk album of all time (and there are far over 70 or 80 amazing albums of that genre. 2 bonus tracks are included here. Indirect Enquiries may be "only" 13th but it's still a 4.0-4.5 song to me.

Your review captures the innovative qualities of Wire well, and even made me rethink my current 3 star evaluation of the album. I will give it another try soon. I felt, however, that this album, despite all its virtuosity, simply does not speak to me on an emotional level. True, the musicians are in perfect control over the song structures, the soundscapes they draw up, and they dare to go great lengths in their experimentation, but to me it all feels thought out with the head rather than felt through with the heart. (Which, admittedly, is a rather subjective judgment.)
