This definitely has gothic themes to it.

very superficial at best

You can tell the gothic influence is in the music as well and not just their image, such as the swelling string-based landscapes of "Imaginary", and the whisper based passages of the ironically titled "Whisper."

if your idea of gothic is Nightwish or something, sure. Evanescence is basically a diet version of an already watered-down form of gothic metal.

I'd consider Nightwish, Within Temptation, and bands of that ilk Gothic, yeah.

This is nu-gothic

I won't argue against bands like Nightwish and Within Temptation having gothic elements (especially when you take into consideration their similarities to pioneering bands like Theatre of Tragedy) but even then it's pretty watered down when compared to the genre's roots.

What would you consider the roots of gothic music Hellscythe?

for gothic metal specifically, bands that basically took the sound of gothic rock (Sisters of Mercy, Fields of the Nephilim, etc.) and combined it with metal (generally doom) like Paradise Lost and Type O Negative.

I've jammed a bit of Type O Negative's music before but it was a long time ago, I remember liking it though.
Any starting points you could recommend me for their discog?

October Rust is my personal favorite, but you can't go wrong with Bloody Kisses or World Coming Down either

Every other song on here pales in comparison to Whisper quality-wise. A solid conclusion to what's otherwise a meh album.

This is alt rock with a very slight gothic influence. The demo Origin has more of it, specifically on tracks like "Even in Death" and "Field of Innocence" which are honestly some of their best material.
Cowboy, I wouldn't put Evanescence in the same line with those bands anyway, but I am sure it would open people to them (certainly did for me).

Field of Innocence is their best song imo

swag

I didn't know that was a secret but yeah. It's a beautiful word.

Almost as beautiful as the fact that Evanescence eventually passed out of sight, memory, and existence from the music public at large
