I liked that it was actually challenging. The narrative style is really unorthodox (to me at least) and it deals with some interesting "philosophical" topics such as reality and identity. I've never been a huge fan of Anime before, but I saw that one mentioned on here and the Wiki article sounded very interesting so I watched it ended up loving it. On another page someone rec'd me Ergo Proxy and that's been kinda mehh so far. I really dig the art style in Ergo Proxy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jb3_pt4woi8) as well as the settting (utopia/dystopia + entourage robots) but the plot is beyond awful (godlike creatures beating eachother up, duhh).

I guess I dig anime with some depth and maturity. Sci-Fi is ok but naruto kinda fantasy blows :/

I have one great rec that is basically the equivalent of like Swans, in that every so-called anime elitist has watched it, there's a lot of content in it, and the presentation renders it almost indigestible (yet is 100% necessary for the story).

It's called The Tatami Galaxy. Not sure how old you are, but if you're in college or about to enter, it's great. It's basically the story of a guy who gets infinite redos to try to make the most of his college life (because we all have fantasies of how college should turn out, right?). The art style is completely unorthodox and the dialogue is fast, so don't expect anything overly artsy. You can Google a picture. Basically the story presentation is fucking brilliant, like one of the best things I've ever seen in my life. The show went from a meek 5/10 up to about a 9/10, because the show otherwise seems like a set of unrelated vignettes (the way they get connected is masterful).

Beyond that, you might really enjoy Baccano! It has far less philosophical value, but it's just a fucking fun watch with a solid dub, great cast of characters, and an interesting narrative with another unique, non-linear presentation. The soundtrack is a fun jazzy affair. You definitely need to be paying attention to get what happens when the show ends.

Both are about 13 episodes. Beyond these two, I hear FLCL is really philosophical but I haven't seen it (despite wanting to) so I can't elaborate. Cowboy Bebop is of course a seminal show that you'd probably like: interesting setting, fabulous characters, and it's built upon a philosophical discourse of dealing with the past. Great soundtrack too.

It's like the Korean version of Beyoncé.

Oh yeah, you may enjoy Fate/Zero (fantastic art/animation, good soundtrack, fantastic characters, very good plot, great action that never is mindless) but you won't see it as a particularly "deep show" unless you specifically think of it as a deconstruction of the concept (or rather, the trope) of a "hero" in which case it gets very, very interesting.

BTW the best things about Fate/Zero and Cowboy Bebop are that there's no answer to the questions they ask, really. So you never feel like you're being patronized, even if it's a didactic experience

Only anime l know of is Naruto, Bleach and One Piece. Used to be into it, but grew out of it.

@joshie if you like shounen but think that those are kind of shitty, try Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. Still shounen (lead character: around 16 years old male, full of action, an "adventure") but with a set amount of episodes (64) = no filler, and it's just 1000x better made than most shounen.

if you've seen avatar:the last airbender and liked that, you'll like this as well (probably moreso). dub is great too so don't worry about having to watch in japanese.

I watched about 250 episodes of Bleach, watching in Japanese doesn't bother me.

lol fair enough, I do prefer the dub of FMA:B though because the VA for the main character is really good (and male). the seiyuu (Japanese VA) is really good too but her being female was a bit of a turnoff.

Anyways I highly recommend it to you, like 3.6 x 10^36 or whatever I rated Cities today (yesterday) lol. If you got through 250 episodes of Bleach, wow... It's like reading Harry Potter after getting through all of Twilight.

Well l was 15, 16, found out about Bleach through a friend, watched 250 episodes in about 3 months. Then got over it.

if you like avatar you too will like fma:b, it's pretty philosophical too for a shonen.

i got into anime just like 8ish months ago from a friend who rec'd me fma:b after finding out how much i liked a:tla (and ghibli movies so he knew i wasn't too resistant to anime). changed my opinion on anime completely.

@joshie, no worries, like i said, i can guarantee you'll dig fma:b. honestly removing all preconceptions, i bet 90% of males under 25 would love fma:b, and maybe 60% of females.

Just finished Ergo Proxy yesterday. I had my doubts about the plot but it got really, really good past like episode 12. Would've never expected to like it that much in the end. Gave it a 8.5/10.
I'll try Texhnolyze now and after that it's time for some Baccano!
