Trust me, As The Palaces Burn is WAY different than Ashes of the Wake. Heavier, better production, and more primal.
Truly superior to Ashes in every way. I can't believe people complain about the production! AtPB has my favourite production of any metal album. Devin Townsend, always the best man for the job.

But Devin Townsend releases so much crap of his own that he clearly can't be trusted with any recording artist.

You must be joking. I love almost everything he releases, aside from his weird ambient albums (E.K.O, Devlab). I would hardly classify them "crap", though.

Eh, this is pretty good, but nowhere near as good as everyone seems to make it out to be.
Those vocals are annoying, but the light, breezy instrumental sections and few clean vocal parts make up for it.

This album... gets old. The songs seem too sterile. Eh... still solid but not amazing.

I can't see that at all. I think it has incredible amounts of replay value. I've probably listened to it about 20 times and I have heaps of stuff to discover still.

Same to you with Bright Eyes, except I have heard entire albums.

It makes me think too much of Dream Theater with more technique and gauged song writing than true creativity. I'll always appreciate that, but it lacks something. I think this needs more atmosphere and not just in the filler tracks. Medicine Wheel is my favorite track nowadays.

I don't believe that this has any filler. If you are saying that it needs more clean and atmospheric stuff, I certainly agree.

I love this band and this album. They're coming to my town with DEP and Horse the Band for $20! That is the ultimate bargain to me, two of my favorite bands in one but FUCK, but I can't go due to work.
I wouldn't call this album as having filler, just contains songs I dislike. Selkies, Alaska, All Bodies and Backwards Marathon are top tier songs. Hell, Selkies might be one of my favorite songs of all time. The ONLY song I find to be lacking in merit is "Croakies and Boatshoes", which is really short and is the only song that leads nowhere. Roboturner has some awesome jazzy moments, Medicine Wheel is a great change of pace, Autodidact is simply pleasure to the ears for the great guitarwork in the middle.
Yeah, it could use a **little** more cleans as they are pretty good at it... I wouldn't mind if each song had at least a very short clean interlude.
Anyway, great review. It convinced me to pick this up

Skip work. Call in sick. Just go to that show.
Selkies has become my least favorite. Just too sterile and.... just not exciting anymore.

Sounds like complex math/deathcore with King Crimson
