Love the vibraphone on this. Bobby Hutcherson is a beast.

over-inflated album, but decent. dolphy was always a better sideman.

tony williams crushes that solo on the title track. not necessarily one of his flashiest but every hit is so purposeful and has a ton of impact

Listening to this record is like the watching the first primordial things crawl out of the ocean onto land. No need for what was and all the promise of what could be
|
| |
yea, an endlessly doodling vibraphone is super primordial.

This shit was watershed, because it shed water like them primordial beasties that crawled up out the ocean of post-bop and set the stage for all them free jazz vertebrates

I wonder if Tom Waits listened to this a bunch before recording Swordfishtrombones.

I was there with Tom Waits at the recording, only thing he was listening to at the time were various kazoo and woodblock cover versions of Rhapsody in Blue performed by duos of men, one a jockey with a clubfoot and the other a timid circus strongman.

Excellent review. I like this album, but don’t love it. Some great performances, though.
