I tried to listen to the division bell the other day and kinda couldn't stand it, just sounded like meditation playlist filler with pretentious lyrics and too many overlong solos. Makes me wonder if his role in 70s Floyd was more punching up and expanding on Roger's ideas than actually coming up with songs from scratch

Yeah they really balanced each other out. I will say i think most of the post-wall discog have gems on them, esp momentary lapse and division bell for me. But i rarely listen to either anymore when there’s so many better albums that they made
If you haven’t checked it already kompy, their Pulse live album is an excellent demonstration of the band’s ability to be Floyd without Roger waters

Like many bands that had been around awhile, Floyd at the start of the 80s were also losing their musical gifts--so the comparison between Rodgers/lyrics and Gilmore et al/music gets complicated. Rodgers turned into an increasingly arrogant and strident ass, which began souring his lyrical/thematic gifts, too. But since Floyd was losing their musical edge, and in-fighting made it even worse, the whole package was bound to suffer. And the post-split stuff from both camps made that super obvious.
