fwiw, most of this album isn't even about her current relationship with Ethan; it's about her divorce.

The songs about Ethan are mostly along the lines of "we caused a lot of damage but we found each other and that's all that matters." The hurt Ethan's wife has experienced is tremendous and I am not excusing that, but tbh I would be shocked if every single person in this thread didn't know at least an acquaintance who had a relationship start by cheating on one side or the other. I am not co-signing that behavior, but I also think the ire levied at Ari has been unnaturally intense when this really isn't THAT out of the ordinary in real life.

It's because she's a popular megastar, and people want/expect those megastars to be the paragon of virtue, so they treat every mistake at the same level of intensity, or blindly defend everything.

Not saying that goes for this site in particular, but it certainly does for social media at large

There’s no doubt that whatever transgressions Ari commits are magnified under the pop star tabloid scrutiny lens but all it takes is a brain for that not to reflect on the severity of the transgression in the grand scheme of all things musicians have ever done, or even “done and then written about for art”, idk, who cares

“All it takes is a brain”

There’s the issue. It feels like 90% of the internet doesn’t have a brain at all

idk even aside the relationship stuff there's been rumors and videos of her and the people around her doing heinous shit for like a decade now. way worse / more damning than your average swift "drama"

i think people go especially hard on her because she lost people's benefit of the doubt long before this. i wouldn't say it hurts her music at all cause sorta like odal said she isn't really trying to hide any of this

That’s also true, she’s been under fire plenty of times before

"Way worse/more damning stuff" like....what lol

I am a pretty massive fan and follow her rather closely. I think she can be mean -the donut incident where she said America sucked was pretty bad not for her saying that, but for treating the service workers like shit- but honestly I can't recall any rumors that come even close to something that would deter me from listening to her music. She seems like an incredibly messy person and clearly has a lot of mental struggles. While I normally hate whataboutism and find it a very unhelpful approach to discourse, I just cannot believe the amount of hate she has received when measured up against Taylor Swift's actions

to be fair to Ari, she grew up on Nickelodeon and there's no doubt in anyone's mind about what happens to kids who work for Nickelodeon

you pretty much said everything i had in mind except for her being a notoriously awful tipper (thanks tik tok), but has taylor done anything nearly as """bad""" as anything you just mentioned ari doing in that comment? with anywhere near the consistency? or anyone else at this level? cause i'm completely blanking here haha

anything taylor seems to get in hot water for seems entirely manufactured for her gain and just feels like palace intrigue at the end of the day. with ari it feels like real shit that any normal person would face consequences for

Jesus Christ who cares. Licking a donut and saying fuck America or whatever is one of the citations? Total double standard

Things I can think of off the top of my head with Taylor:

-CO2 emissions

-bending Olivia Rodrigo over the barrel for royalties for an unnecessary song writing credit

-throwing Katy Perry under the bus with her dancer feud and then releasing her entire discography on streaming the day Katy released Witness

-the Kanye phone call (I'll grant her some grace with this since he did the whole VMA thing)

-cheating on multiple partners (I don't really care about this, but as long as people are holding it against ari, it needs to be brought up lol)

-pretending to be progressive for precisely one year (pretty much everything from her Miss Americana doc has aged like milk)

-holding the vinyl industry hostage with her ridiculous amounts of vinyl variants

-suing a teenager for tracking her jet

-suing her guitar teacher from when she was a child for advertising that he taught her

again, besides the emissions and the guitar teacher thing... that's all just palace intrigue and marketing.

taylor picks on people (almost) her own size. ari picks on everyday people. not to dismiss taylor's skeletons but i feel like it should be easy to understand why most people don't care about any of that stuff compared to ari tipping $5 on a $1000 dinner bill. just a way more visceral reaction when its stuff that can actually happen to you in your everyday life

Also for Taylor, basically her whole Oscars showing caught flak from a lot of people

@Alex

it's marketing, but I think you're holding this on the wrong side of the line in the sand. Taylor's PR team is notoriously one of the most active in the game. My whole point is not to demonstrate that Ari is somehow a saint or that Taylor is the worst person in the world, it's to show that the PR game is fickle and it's that difference responsible for Taylor largely being unscathed and Ari facing so much flak.

I forgot to point everything out about her recent Grammy's (not Oscars) presence, but I wasn't sure how much weight to give that. Completely ignoring Celine Dione, who had worked so hard to make an appearance in her health, and then ignoring Boygenius' physical and emotional boundaries paints a pretty good picture on what kind of person she is behind the scenes imo and it's likely not all that different from Ari's

it’s all dumb and frankly ordinary and who cares but for my part the ick inspired by tales of taylor’s once upon a time thirst for young conor kennedy, simulated ick tho it be since such great distance between real life and the dynastic power fantasies of poplitics, eh, it’s much less playfully simulated than the words I’d have for Ariana if I gave a shit about possible lapses of character. alas all I have for her is: good album Ari and thanks for the jamz
