Previous one is a step back imo, still good though. Are some really sweet moments on this

referring to the dead light i wouldn't say a 'step back' as much as a 'side step' - pretty clear they weren't going for the ambitiousness of 'winter' which i think is smart. i do like this more than the dead light though - they really know how to write unpredictable, complex and compelling songs and to hear them not rely on atmosphere for the sake of showing that off is really cool. this might be my album of the year so far.

Was just referring to my rating of dead light. Agree with you in all else besides the aoty title so far. May well end up there, though. Usually takes damn long time for their albums to sink in.

it's funny - winter and carrion skies clicked for me straight away. this and the dead light took a bit longer. i think a lot of that is down to my expectations. i'm stoked that every album feels totally different, they're among the best black metal bands going right now.

Fen is without a doubt the most played bm band for me, with Moonsorrow close after. Carrion skies is probably top 5 ever, and I started my obsessive music listning 1984 lol. Took me up to a year to really grasp everything that's going on on that album, although the amazing ominuous/relaxing/diverse music of it hooked me early on. Few albums have the same emotional impact on me. This one is getting better and better, although i hade some doubts in the beginning.

I really think they do that “atmosphere” better than anyone in the genre DN. Well since Agalloch anyway. I miss it. It’s why Winter is so fantastic. They mixed in those parts perfectly for such a blunt black metal album and it’s why Dead Light is so emotional. Here, Truth In Futility is my favorite song because of the atmosphere. I just wanted more of that.

over time i have come to love carrion skies more than winter - it captured something really special. every track is amazing and the closer is probably the most emotionally hard-hitting song of their career.

Think it's the same old fen with more focus on anger/aggressiveness

Even harder if you're trying to keep up with new releases plus jamming old music. I need longer days!

And damn this is a grower.

Ok, not really surprised. Keeps getting better and needs a bump. Have to mention Fen's impact on me. Been more or less ill for 2,5 monthts in covid and lost interest in most things, music included. Put on Carrion skies after several tries with other music and was dragged into that magnificent album as usual. In terms of concistency, best album ever. Don't think this will ever catch up, but it's not that far away.

God I hope I dig this one. Love this band but the album before this is an absolute snoozefest.
