this guy has everything it takes to go at least semi-mainstream in the fuckboy country world and the more he fails to do so the harder he tries, I honestly don’t blame him at all but it doesn’t make for super interesting albums

I quite liked Shape & Destroy despite the fact that a number of the songs there bordered on cringey butt rock and radio country-type stuff. This is listenable and sometimes excellent (I particularly like Mending Song), but overall this moves a lot down that road and I'm hoping it's not a sign of things to come for future releases.
The chorus of "Michael Keaton" is hilariously bad to me, would've been a great punchline in a hip-hop song but repeating it three times throughout a song as an entire chorus is wild.

lol it's a goofy lyric but it makes sense within the context of a song about accidentally getting high from CBD (an equally if not more goofy premise though)

no i would write the greatest ska album of all time and everyone would despise me for it

you would go to the bar and tell everyone you're a genius for writing the first noise synth ska album with no guitars

they would laugh
and i would play the chiptune demos from my phone speakers
and then everyone would buy me free shots forever
and i would die from tequila poisoning and ruston kelly would read my story in the news have have a "bro wish i could write a song about that" moment

"and then everyone would buy me free shots forever"
that would be a viable strategy to put an end to it yes

I have listened to this a few times now and it is definitely a big step down from his last album for me. The beginning is definitely clunky. Songs like Keaton have a great, pop feel to them and he absolutely ruins it with the piss poor lyricism. Mending Song is where the album starts improving for me and might be my personal highlight. Second half is better but not particularly memorable either. I enjoy the sparse Cold Black Mile closing out the album too.

Yeah, there’s a lot of generic pop rock stuff here that I don’t really vibe with. “Let Only Love Remain,” “Mending Song,” and “Better Now” are good though.

The problem with the pop rock stuff for me is that the lyrics are just abysmal and the hooks just aren't there. There was lots of pop rock type stuff on his last release too, but it was carried by him well.

A part of me is almost feeling like I'm giving this a 3.5 out of loyalty. Some great, some ok, some bad. I wouldn't put any of this in his top 10 songs (or potentially anywhere close).

Maybe its a 3, but I think that might be a little generous.
