Another killer review, Gnocchi. This tracks more as a 3.7-3.8 for me if I could rank it so particularly. I lean 4 because I'm big enough of a fan at this point. Still have only put in a few listens and have to dig deeper with it.

Also, I don't understand how people think Citadel was not good but this (or Urn) is. Their sound and approach to songwriting has changed like less than 10% since their debut. Production is different and the albums since Portal flow a little better but that's about it.

Second half of Citadel's songwriting is complete janky bullshit - nothing here comes close to that level of mess except the second track (which coincidentally enough sharts pancakes)

You think Blackhole has janky songwriting? Alright…

This is very noodly and reminiscent of Unexpect, I like it.

Listening to the NeO discog front to back and then evolving into a balrog at the end of Exul

Citadel was amazing and I'm not getting the hate for that (Blackholes is easily one of their best and one of my fav bass parts in any song) but Urn was immediately, while not bad, a much weaker entry, and the loss of their bassist was *very* felt on that album, whereas here, very much not the case.
Incredible record and much the return to form/even a step up that I'd been hoping for.

This is a good album but not on the level of Unexpect, it's not nearly weird enough.

doesn't quite have the same standard of fuckoff obnoxious massive riffs either
but i don't think it'd benefit from extra weirdness

"Second half of Citadel's songwriting is complete janky bullshit"
I feel like I come here for that. NeOb makes 12-minute janky bullshit and I'm so happy to not have to wade through eleven songs with the exact same writing formula.

Took me a few listens but this has grown on me a lot. Might put this above Citadel and Urn.

made it about 3 minutes through the first song

This is neat but I don't feel like it brings anything new to the table. What is this other than 2007-2012 era Quebec prog death worship?
