Very nice. Great arrangements and transitions as we’ve come to expect.
First run through and it looks like they’ve done it again

idk man for every good song on this (starless paths) there's a mundane one. there's a lot of glaring moments where the lyrics don't suit the instrumental backdrop - especially on 'the witch hunter'. it really feels like they tried to fit pre-existing material around the theme rather than writing *from* the theme.
not to mention 'white christ' is absolutely the worst song of their career.
though i will say i'm glad that the singles were the worst songs on this - but the rest is like... idk man. it's definitely *good* but it doesn't feel either substantiably different from their other material or a good match with the concept.

Godforsaken and Starless Paths stand out. I’m never concerned about lyrics tbh. White Christ is more of a modern RC song than Insomnium. It’s a bit out of place

it's not the lyrics are necessarily bad (mostly) but they aren't a match for the music at all.

"not to mention 'white christ' is absolutely the worst song of their career."
I don't even need to listen to the rest of this album to strongly agree with you

A good producer wouldn't let White Christ make the cut, but the album is not defined by this song.

it *is* however defined by thematic mismatch, and that song suffers the most from it.

Mismatch in what sense?

as i said, between the lyrics and the instrumentation. it feels like they threw these lyrics onto other songs rather than recorded songs specifically for the concept they had in mind.

I don’t always trust hasty impressions. Albums such as this that need to be taken in as a full body of work need time to marinate IMO.

I dig White Christ. One of the weaker tracks but still bangs with that melo emo death we all know and love.

white christ has grown on me tbh, far from the worst song theyve made. And Bells They Toll from HLaG is way worse imo

I do dislike me some Bells they toll, ngl. Need more time to listen to Anno but first impressions, it's a step up from Heart Like a Grave.

Omnium Gatherum still riffs so don't know why you think Markus Vanhala is the reason they don't riff anymore.
He is credited with music on 6 of 10 tracks on Heart Like a Grave, 4 of which he is the sole contributor. I said that half in jest since he happened to come into the band at a time when they transitioned to their new sound but overall I dislike his riffing style. Pale Morning Star is a banger and he wrote it, but that's an exception rather than the norm imo

Pale Morning Star may very well be my favorite Insomnium song.

It's the best song they've written in their modern era and it's not even close
Giving this album a spin now

After first spin my takeaway is that "The Unrest" is the best song on the album which is....scary.... but it's truly a lovely song. "Starless Paths" is second best.

I know it has been mentioned already, but that first paragraph being intentionally misleading is rubbing me the wrong way. Witch trials were a non-factor in the demographic catastrophy of the region. I don‘t know why you have to distort history to show how harsh life was in Finland 1696 when the death toll speaks for itself.
Yes, I know this is completely irrelevant to the music…

If I fail my test on the plague of 1696, I'm coming back here. I just want you to know...
