After several more spins I still think this is perfectly serviceable and even occasionally quite good black metal album in a total vacuum. It only seems like a total disappointment in the context of DsO’s own discography. This is just remarkably safe considering almost everything else they’ve done has been adventurous in *some* capacity.

Well to be fair the band is on record as believing that "to experiment musically or lyrically should be punished by torture"

album ratings for this are hilarious. love when beloved bands are taken for granted because they didn't release a genre-shaping album one time lol. maybe they're trying to weed the edgelords out of their fan base

definitely toward the bottom of their discography, but still good metal

@tect

When you set the bar so high yourselves it's almost impossible to take an album 'for what it is' when so much came before it was if an incredible quality. Their gift..their cures...or something

'weed the edgelords out of their fan base'

haha The highest of fucking edge lords now wanna weed edglords out their fanbase because they put something out that doesn't come close to a standard that THEY themselves have set . So we've had they wanna just weed the edge lords AND theyre just so above this plane of existence that we just can't comprehend it. Amazing.

I've had to eat it that one of my fave bands has a nazi vocalist but so many can't accept they've made a pretty Mediocre album bar one track. That's the 'hilarious' part..you hold on tho.

First review on a profile has to be manually approved and there's probably no mods online right now

“maybe they're trying to weed the edgelords out of their fan base“

Nothing says this more than having Mikko Aspa and Mortuus performing vocals on your album.

“love when beloved bands are taken for granted because they didn't release a genre-shaping album one time lol”

I don’t have a problem with iterative releases, or even slight variations on a theme, my problem with this album is how poorly it’s executed. Incredibly uninspired guitar work, totally bereft of engaging progressions, which I never thought I’d say about DsO. Blut Aus Nord had already released melodic BM albums prior to Memoria Vetusta II, but the actual quality of the material made that aspect moot.

thought this was mostly pure ham (very methul yes yes), bass tone is on point and the second half of Sie sind Gerichtet was kinda impressive. every melodic or lyrically comprehendible vocal segment was a good laff

the only other DsO i bothered with was Paracletus, and the gap between the two is, uh, something? gotta say i'm more interested in pirating everything that came between now

hope this treasure of a review never gets featured
