I welcome the 70+ minute runtime. There's very little good new music within the genre I enjoy (just my opinion of course). I've been listening to this in halves, and not always starting with The Destination Onward.
This album is fucking awesome.

I am in song 8, and Trey's review (especially the epilogue) makes infinite sense.
It's a FW album, but it's free of the more or less expected puns that come with every FW album.
Edit:
"Glass Houses" is the first song here that caught me immediately.

No mention of the lyrical concepts... which seem to be explored at nearly a concept album level. I felt the music did a great job expressing the existential dread/anxiety of each section... but to not realize that would definitely lead to an underwhelming experience.

@Ikarus14 I think it’s a metaphor for dying, the final moments, which the whole album is about. Whether or not this is connected with their actual trajectory as a band, who knows?

Those floor toms around 4:45 - 5:30 of The Longest Shadow are freakin sweet

Where Bobby goes bonkers, agreed dude! DUNDUNUDUN DUUUUUUUUUUUUNNNNNNNNNN
In love with the first two minutes of the song. I love that repeating clean melody. It's so rhythmically pleasing to the ear, and the band's jam session is great. Then that final Jim riff on the left channel during the outro with Joey's groovy bass underneath is my addiction atm

Saw this on itunes, Ray speaking about The Last Song:
“It’s funny that this is called ‘The Last Song’ because I think it may have been the last song we worked on. It’s odd because I think it’s the first time Jim and I ever co-wrote lyrics. I started writing about the band itself and what we’ve done all these years—there’s a line about walking down the only path I’ve ever known, which, for me, has been music for the last 35 years. That’s what I’ve lived my life for. And then Jim kind of tied it back to the first couple of songs on the album, because the band is going to end sometime. I think Jim no longer wants to write new music for Fates Warning. I think this may be our last album. And this was a kind of way to say that. We all still want to tour, but as far as new music, I think it’s done.”
Even in some other interview I heard Ray saying the same thing about Jim's desire to not write for Fates. Really hoping it's just a phase for Jim and it's the burnout talking. Would really suck if they disbanded after this. Maybe that's why they wrote a diverse album?

I have no problem with them calling it quits. 35 years. Remarkable career. It has to end sometime, why not on top?

I kind of got the feeling this might be their last album based on the album title, that final song closing out the album, as well as how they decided to pull influences from all the Ray Alder albums (maybe not No Exit directly, but I'd say this album has some of the most metal tracks since No Exit).

I need you guys to delete the 3 posts above this one. 2020 has been bad enough.
Reading them gave me such an ill feeling....

It's not like they would retrieve from music, however. Adler and Jim are already having some side projects with quality music, keeping their flame alive. I'd rather have inspired musicians than an uninspired band.

Yeah but this band is far from uninspired. These last 2 albums are some of their very best material throughout their entire career.

somehow I knew I would see a 4.0 rating from Titan on here ;-]
nice review as always, Willie!

It’s totally understandable for Fates Warning to stop some time soon, I mean these guys are either in their early or late 50s right now...
That said, I really hope Matheos and Kevin Moore will get back together for OSI.

I like this more than their last 3 albums at least

Agreed with titan, band is on the ascendency, no need to stop now. Jim can take 4+ years between albums if he wants, just don't close the door. He practically writes a song every other day so I'm sure he'll be writing for Fates again eventually
This album will be so much fun live. Liar and Glass Houses are such fun rockers

Definitely heard some elements of Parallels in here, still need more listens but album does sound like a mix of most their discography (sans No Exit and before, etc.).
|
| |
This sounds more like they took some of the heaviness and riffing from their recent works are filtered them through their Perfect Symmetry/Parallels/Inside Out aesthetic. I really dig it
