this has bothered me for years - anyone else notice that Brendan looks and sounds a lot like the actor Jake Johnson, and they're both from Chicago? are lots of Chicago guys like them?

The Story So Far has fantastic vox. No reason genre has to live down to shitty standards.

uhhhhhhhh yes there are in fact very strong reasons why the standards are different with respect to punk music. y'know, the whole thing about punk being for weirdos, outsiders and amateurs rather than people who fit within traditional standards of music, society, and "pleasant sounding voices". some people might say that's whole point of the genre...
hehe but w/e that's all just peripheral. you dont have to like the vocals, whatever floats yr boat.

Oof I personally enjoy Brendan's songs so much more than Chris' which all sound very similar. I also find his style of singing really dull.

this is pretty groovy. Quiet Storm is really solid.

Did you honestly just say the charm is that it sucks?

No, I understand the point that's being made: that punk arose as a scrappy, underdog kind of genre that rebelled against [insert societal woe here]. As such, part of the charm was the genuine presentation of ire, which could be sloppy as opposed to nice and polished. In that regard, vocals that are rough around the edges add to the charm.
However, I do agree that the vocals here are so off the mark that it's hard to justify them under that explanation. Like, in emo, for instance, you could talk about the above sort of idea--unclean/imperfect vocals as charming or part of the genre--when discussing Brave Little Abacus. Vocals can make or break that band, but I find that the presentation there is a lot more palatable in comparison to this.

Beyond the vocals though, if those are disregarded, I think the songwriting is just very dull throughout and I can't really single out any track as memorable.

Belly of the Whale is super catchy.

i see you've enjoyed some of TLA's past work so it's interesting that you don't like Bren's vox on this album. imo his vocal performance here is not that far off what he was doing on records like Oh Calcutta. i'd even go further to say that i enjoy the extra gruffness and the sound of him straining his voice for the higher notes like on "Pigeons and Spies"

the chipmunk vocals....
i know it was for like five seconds but it's still a no for me chief
|
| |
Yeah, I didn't like that at all either, but it's just one line so w/e.
|
| |
Plot twist: It's all chipmunk vocals.
Also Nihilist Arby's is hilarious so I do give him credit for that. That account was a favorite of mine years ago and never knew who was behind it.
