I've never actually met a 1975 fan

What are their characteristics and why are they so bad?

A lot of straight up bad people I know like the first album and the songs that sound like that from their following records. None of the superfans I've met irl are bad tho

They tweet about Matty the same way K-pop fans stalk their favorite artists....

I still laugh that this band get compared to Radiohead. I'm a big fan of the second and third albums, and for a pop band they're moderately "avant garde" but seeing people suggest that this or Brief History are like Kid A is jokes.

The worst example is my musician friend who fell for these guys. Me and him used to be super close and I found his sheer musical talent inspirational. Then he became a super fan of these guys and it’s like it took over his entire identity... he used to have an amazing talent for classical composition and could whip out solos on a piano like none other. And now he just regurgitates the sounds and styles of this band. And he runs his social media’s like a complete sold out e-boy fuckwad.... all his songs are slow ballads with a hint of electronics and lyrics along the lines of “I don’t get laid enough, I’m sad!”

I swear, him becoming a fan of this band killed his passion for music.

Don’t even hate this album from what I’ve heard.
Just describing the cultish effect I’ve seen this bands fanbase have on people.

Why anyone would drop their aspirations for synth pop with noodling electronic effects in the background is beyond me

I have no idea, but I have never met casual fans of The 1975. All their fans that I know of like them to the point that it dominates their music taste in an almost brazen manner. It's weird.

As opposed to dominating their music in a non-dominant fashion yes

Edit: nvm ninja edit

But yeah I guess that's how most cult followings tend to be. At the same time, they're so commercially viable that I find it hard to believe there aren't a ton of people like me who just find them interesting but not particularly good (I Like It When You Sleep...is a masterpiece though).

The only one I know who likes this band is my brother and then he only jams the real pop-leaning stuff on each album. I guess that's my biggest problem with them too. They could write a solid pop album but they're so up in the clouds that they insist on filling their albums with superfluous fluff.

I think these guys are plenty talented and capable but it does sound like they just regurgitate better artists from across the music spectrum on a lot of the more recent material. I'll be patiently waiting for them to drop an album with even the slightest bit of cohesion because I'm sure it will be quality. This just seems sloppy.

exactly what lucman said, love their pop hate their highfalutin nonsense

A whole album of Change of Heart and Its Not Living type stuff would get a 5/5 from me

That's probably why I prefer I Like It When You Sleep...so much because even though that has its share of ambient filler, it's the closest they've come to just putting out a straightforward album (besides their debut, which isn't quite as good)

Yup, if these guys took a step back, recognized their musical strengths (most of which are in the pop arena), and made those the focus of an entire record, they could pull something great out of their asses. Won’t happen tho.

in today's streaming pick-and-choose era i tend to be pretty forgiving of overly bloated albums if there's a 5/5 hidden in there, so perhaps i will check this out
