Can't believe you managed to incorporate references to every single one of the band's albums except for Everflow. A travesty! Also, said album could easily be considered their darkest and moodiest, so it's just a bit strange those were descriptors you kept using in a way which, through omission, singled it out specifically as not principally definable by those qualities.

I didn't even notice I hit every album but that one. This one and Everflow are dark and atmospheric in different ways. I will say that.

Edit: Everflow has more of a 'mystical' feel to it, and this one has more of a tangible realistic feel to it.

Agree with "older" prog metal being better than today. Fates Warning are incredible still but that's about it. I dug last years Evergrey too. Riverside kinda gliding along since Piotr's death. Haken's vocalist is complete shit or I would really like them. Am I missing anyone else?

Fates Warning, Evergrey, Haken...all take a more old school approach to heavy prog as opposed to neo-prog bands like BtBaM, NeO, Intronaut, Rivers of Nihil, Disillusion, Orphaned Land...that play a style of prog closer to extreme metal.
Fates Warning and Evergrey are rather morose and downtrodden in texture, where Haken feels more playful. Ross isn't one of my favorite vocalists - and I'll always veer closer to the morose than the playful - but I feel that his vox do fit Haken's sound.

Riverside feels closer to a band like Porcupine Tree in the sense that, even though they tried to incorporate splashes of heaviness, their core sound feels more light prog than heavy prog and it's the former they're more apt at. At least imho.

As for forgetting someone...in terms of heavy prog there's bands like Leprous, Karnivool, Seventh Wonder...even though Leprous is gradually moving over to the light prog side of things.

I would add Kingcrow to the list of good modern prog. Particularly their newest album.
