(Good review btw - been waiting for this one to get reviewed so we can all talk about how great it is.)

Did Sixpence None The Richer have some alternate career I don't remember? The one I remember made whimsical but frivolous pop that is light years removed from this album.

...and if we're not in alt-country territory we are straddling the border.

did someone say alt-country???

Straddling the border is fair I'd say! Don't go in expecting it to sound alt-country, but there are influences for sure

loathsome vocals on this sadly - music is nothing too exciting but certainly not obnoxious most of the time

This sounds a bit like the stuff you'd turn the dial on the radio to avoid in the 90s.
It's only one step removed from Alanis or Sheryl Crow - it's a bit more indie but the sound of it, just a no from me
'Mono no Aware' is one of the worst songs I've heard this year, grating indeed

This is the kind of stuff I'd watch 120 minutes to find in the 90s. I'm not surprised by a Doof 2 but the "loathsome vocals" take is wow. An impassioned and convincing Frances Quinlan-lite performance I'd say. Of course I love Glass Beach, Prince Daddy and the Hyena and McCafferty so I'm fairly desensitized at this point.

The only edgy element of this sound that makes them stand out from radio fodder is those vocals and I can take Big Thief and Mothers and a bit of off key whine n' bleat...but these are frequently very unpleasant indeed

There's some truth to the signature song structure Great Grandpa uses on this album, but the breadth of song styles and influences, choice of instrumentation, and overall quality of production make this an album that never gets old and, in fact, just gets better with every listen. I find something new to like every time I listen--which is often. AOTY candidate in my view.

I hate the production - it sounds ‘90s radio glossy’

That'll do Doof. That'll do.

I wish the vocals were a little more Quinlan, I find them a tad bland. :c Undoubtedly a good singer, but I don't like her melodies at all.
Also, this is definitely like an emo Sixpence, which is not a bad thing, Sixpence is good!!!

So these guys are touring at the moment with another great band, Dump Him. Their latest album Dykes to Watch out For, is really good. Worth checking out if you into this, Hop Along or queercore

Sputnik has really come through with some excellent recommendations toward the end of this year. I was balls deep in Wilderun, but now this has captured my attention.
1st listen: Yeah, yeah, it's very "nice" and nostalgic, but there's nothing that'll really grab me and keep me.....3rd listen: Hold on, each song really does have something special in it. I'm hooked after all.

I bet me and lucman have 40 spins between us. I didn't decide I loved this until I was at least approaching double digits.
