Post-metal of course, which is just another way of saying atmospheric sludge, which it very much is. Prog isn’t necessary as it’s implied in the ‘post’ and this certainly doesn’t have traditional prog elements.

"And flug is right, amazing as the Ocean may be, they are not as good as these guys"

Yap I guess not...although my rates are somehow coincident..really dug their latest release though...

We go for PostMetal then...I think sludge is becoming too broad of a concept nowadays...

There is still a difference between atmospheric sludge and post metal i feel, although the differences are so negligible that you might aswell use them interchangeably. We do have both descriptors for a reason though so why not just use them.

Pelagial is a grower. Took me a while to get into it but now its one of my favorites. Still prefer Phanerozoic over it though.

weird premise to start with that post metal is masculine when Oceanic stopped that idea long long ago

It certainly doesn’t ‘have’ to be masculine, it’s rare that I think of music in these terms anyway so I just glossed over that part of the review (and shurugged).

One album did not make me view the genre as a whole differently I guess. I've deliberately not wrote it as a fact though, it's the image and association I have with the genre, which doesn't make it true persé.

I usually don't either tbh, it's Mariner that made me think about it in that way because it felt so different and refreshing because it had female vocals.

I see Mariner as a separate entity entirely, so agreed that they made the right decision in not going down that road (without the accompanying vox)... it likely wouldn’t have sounded right.

I loved Mariner for what it was. I wouldn't mind them doing another one of those at all. I know I've said this before, but a Chelsea Wolfe collab? Pretty please?

Not jammed this band before but had the chance to listen to the first couple tracks off this while taking lunch. Definitely impressed, will jam the whole album for sure.

New CoL fans are always welcome. For what it’s worth that’s my least fave part of the album as well (not that I was disappointed or anything).

This is probably the most exhaustive yet rewarding album I’ve heard in recent memory.
