yup for some albums you can just tell when you don't like it, do I have to listen to the full album to rate it? no, would that sway my view on it? perhaps, but the 3 songs I've heard from this had dissonant riffs, boring vocals, a bass tone I'm not too fond of, unnoticeable drumming, and oh yeah, did I mention the riffs go nowhere?

Yeah honestly those 3 listens weren't too much of a slog because it just became background noise soon enough LOL. My first listen I just forgot it was on entirely until the silence interrupted its ending. The 2nd and 3rd are when I made an effort to pay more attention and ended up getting bored. Oh well. I still like thee guys, I'm just not a fan of this particular style being stretched across a whole album.

Appreciate the compliment Nomos. And the insightful commentary is always welcome.

Kind of a soulless album. The instrumentals are very cool but the singer sounds passionless and I don’t like the way he writes his melodies either.

He fits for a while until you realize he dominates the album's runtime and it becomes droning.

Respectfully disagree, I gave it the rating that I believe it earned and did my best to justify that. It's just a difference in tastes/standards/expectations my man.

Really nice metaphor, but I like the dish as it's served haha. I can see your points though, and think it's a really good review!

So we should call this "prog-core"? interesting name, we should adopt it.

I agree that this sounds like The Contortionist but lacking the inspo. And yes, it makes me really sad that no one will try to "emulate" Exoplanet, maybe they did but can't achieve it. It pisses me off when everyone here says "there are a thousand bands doing the Exoplanet sound" yeah well, show me just one!

BTW Mars, did you give the new The Odious a listen?

I think a lot of people take parts of Exoplanet's sound but never try to fully replicate it. For this record, I definitely got a sense of that futuristic vibe with their post-rock elements and especially the robo-vocal-esque delivery. Glad you liked the review!

And I listened to that earlier this year, though admittedly don't remember it too well these days. Was a solid offering but wasn't able to break through to a higher rating in my book.

(the odious) It's a solid release, it kinda gets lost once you reach 2/3 of it, but solid nonetheless.

I still think these guys (unprocessed) can pull something better eventually, I hope they don't go full late Contortionist on me and keep their heavy elements.

I'm glad we agree that Aathma is a sold 5!

I think if they dropped the prog metal and djent in favor of full-on post-rock without losing heavy moments, they could reach different heights.

"So we should call this "prog-core"?"

No because this isn't progcore. Bands like Erra, Invent Animate, Novelists, old Northlane, and bands of that ilk are progcore

full-on post rock would render this band very boring, I don't really see what they could do with atmospheric drifting in the moments that aren't heavy since they're mostly good for the groove

Considering I already find them boring, I'd be up for them to try something different.

that's quite fair, but i would definitely not go with post-rock lol (that's the one option which would guarantee that this band becomes more boring than they already are)
