Will Yip loves his lowered vocal mixes. The band said this was intentional and that they are tired of so many mixes being based around vocals/bass so they wanted something a little different. Personally, I like it for the most part but I can see why people wouldn't and there are a few parts that it doesn't quite work as well as they thought

I think low vocals work well when there is something else, cool guitar parts perhaps, to focus on instead but a lot of the vocals here are low for the sake of being low and not to the advantage of the actual songs.

I can agree with that, though I kind of like that it forces me to pay attention more to the album. It's a pretty brisk and breezy listen for me

Nice review but could you of thought of any other word besides blobby haha. POS

thanks for all the kind words everyone, I'm hoping to write on here more often again for a bit. And no, blobby was the only appropriate word for description lol
Darius, would definitely recommend listening to Empty Days & Sleepless Nights if you haven't but Letters Home and Abandoned are pretty inessential. Letters has some jams, but isn't anything that will knock your socks off

Empty Days is the only Defeater I consistently jam. This album really isn't too shabby either.

Yeah, they confirmed it's Jeff in their AMA on r/posthardcore

You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become Defeater.

List and He’ll is great. Can’t remember a second of the rest

Next album will be the perspective of the family dog.
Have they ever explained why they refuse to write about anything else?

There are moments lost on me because I just can't stand Will Yip's burying of vocals. The vocals are already cupped, double cupped, and now they sound triple cupped. It's weird, I don't enjoy it.

During their AMA they said that they now feel like the concept is inseparable from the project so that they will never release anything under Defeater not related to the story in some way. Lost Ground showed how far they can stretch what that means, but... even Coheed put out songs that are just by themselves lol

I think things have come to a point where you simply have to set aside the redundancy of Defeaters story and look at things from a strictly music based standpoint because honestly, I do feel like they're at least embracing a change of pace with a sound that is a lot slower and brooding and, imo, emotionally charged based on sound alone. Yeah, the stories old but I think the energy and catharsis is making a comeback

@odal
That's understandable but also makes the process of writing records more difficult than needed I imagine

Still waiting for that Trebor review on this. Get Em !!! Mix is awful , for a band that focuses on story telling and vocals to have them buried is pitiful. People might like yip and his work but dosnt work here.
