The thing I hate the most about this is how the low end chugging riffs make this sound like every single modern dm album out there. You could slap another band name on this album and everybody would be all "this is meh". Not going to lie, I had more fun listening to the ridiculousness that was Illud Divinum Insanus then this borefest.
blackened death metal/almost quasi-caverncore
Lets not confuse this with most modern dm riffing ;).

I don’t care what anyone pretends to think. This album has a distinctive and unique sound that could only ever come from the mind of Trey Azagthoth. If you think the riffs on this album are anything but the truest Azagthothian invocations then you’re just looking to be wrong.
Nothing about this is generic or like any other dm band out there.
Whether or not it’s enjoyable to you is a completely different story.

I agree that it's very Azagothian, but I feel like it's pretty obvious he constructed a lot of these riffs w/a more modern DM sound.

There’s not really such a thing as a modern dm sound unless it pertains to a separate subgenre. Death metal as a blanket genre has not changed much since the 80s.

This so hard. I fucking love you, Astral.

Mediocre, at least this is their best since Heretic. I know, it's super easy to be that lol.

I **guesssss** but i don't know, i usually associate, cleaner produced, more technical death metal to be the "modern" death metal sound which is why when we talk about bands with a more classic style we identify as sounding OSDM.
Either way, I didn't mean to imply that his riffing sounds more clinical or "modern" in that sense, but i get a lot of the serpentine black/death feeling from some of the riffs here.

Death Metal like any other genre has evolved since its creation, thanks to the fusion of other sub-genres mostly.
|
| |
But its evolution has not been as dramatic as black metal for example.

It's definitely evolved to be less thrashy than it used to be and yeah production has changed, technicality even in just regular death metal has changed to be more precise, etc.
But y'all underrating this album is making me real sad. Album is sick, I'm surprised it's receiving mixed reviews.

I feel like any death metal that isn’t already “old school” already has a subgenre name: tech death, prog death, brutal death, black/death, slam death, etc.
And some of those genres in themselves have specific periods that see stylistic changes.
But as a whole, the idea of plain ol “death metal” is relatively unchanged from the basics laid down in ‘84. The whole idea of even specifying style via locale is getting outdated with the modernisation of music sharing technology.

The only thing good about this album is the return to Death Metal, gave it a couple of spins and to me it's just boring and as generic as it gets.

This is a 2.5-3 for me. Pretty decent. Way better than the last/recent Morbid Angel I jammed, which isn't saying much.

Im puzzled by the low reviews some folks are giving.
Far from generic to me.
