keep leaning between a 3 and a 3.5 - overall a bit lacking. a better attempt than celestial lineage and their attempts at a grandiose, tension-building black metal rather than a spacious, atmospheric soundscape was definitely better achieved here but the structuring is really predictable (black metal / ambient break / doomy black segment / end, every track), some of the synths sound a bit gaudy (break in angrboda) and overall it just doesn't feel fully realized in its potential. it does have some great riffs and moments and it's an enjoyable listen, and with it being an improvement on celestial lineage it makes me confident they'll up the ante next album and deliver something really spectacular again next time.

Violet Cold rules so hard. Could be thinking of Mesarthim too who also rules aside from the god awful debut.

He got way, way less cheesy after the debut. Most recent album and EP are fantastic though.

Super strange production on here. Some of the clean parts sound louder and like they were recorded better than the actual metal parts. Which is strange and sounds like bad mixing to me. People might argue that it's black metal and supposed to sound that way but it just seems like it was shoddily put together to me. And some of the transitions are abrupt and could have been performed in a more tasteful way but it's like they were too lazy to be bothered.

I agree Eons. Those are my main complaints with the album... the abrupt transitions is not something I mentioned before but I definitely think its a flaw.

with regards to '17 black metal, I have it behind Botanist, Beltez, Ruins of Beverast, Havukruunu, Enisum, Falls of Rauros, Heretoir, Fen, Opprobre, and The Great Old Ones.
