Plus, I've always liked Going Blank Again over Nowhere, and this falls more in line with GBA than Nowhere.

Yeah as you can probably tell from my review I was hoping for more of that Nowhere shoegaze style thing they do and this just ended up sounding like bland, albeit summery, britpop. if you preferred Going Blank Again it makes sense that you'd dig this a lot! this is honestly a close 3 for me but I also wanted to try my hand at a more negative sounding review since I haven't done those in awhillleeee

Fair enough. Here's how I see the album.

Ride went from being shoegaze pioneers (something I don't think even they planned) to reinventing themselves with GBA. They flopped big time with Carnival and Tarantula. They broke up, whereas MBV and Slowdive stayed together in some fashion - MBV is Kevin Shields, and Slowdive became Mojave 3 - and still worked on their projects. Ride came back, played some kick ass shows and felt like writing a record.

JAMC on the other hand collected B-sides and solo work and threw the album together. I liked it, mainly b/c it was a JAMC album just like they were doing in the 90s. Weather Diaries is a labor of love, half for themselves, and half for their fans who wanted a better bookend on their career than their late 90s work. That's what Weather Diaries is, a collection of tracks that show their strengths, pushing a few boundaries (some positive, some negative), but in the end coming up with an album that is inherently a Ride album, but also a shoegaze album.

There are no doubt some cringe worthy lyrics, but Bell was never great at writing lyrics, Slowdive was always better at that. Charm Assault comes to mind, but it's still a banger of a track if you can forgive the chorus which I can.

In the end, the albums exactly what it needed to be this time around, and whether they continue on and write another one, I think we can expect to see new things come from them. Not many bands can go on hiatus and come back this strong. Was this a necessary album? Not really. No one asked for it. But for a band that made the wrong decision 20 years ago, trying to correct that trajectory wasn't going to be easy. What we have instead is an album full of sunny shoegaze, which made need some tweaking down the line, but all in all is a serviceable album, and that in of itself to me is a great thing.

haha yeah some great points man! I guess after hearing Slowdive's comeback album before this, it didn't really live up to that but they are a different band afterall

honestly curious if people would like this better if it were the debut record of some new band

most of the complaints I've seen (not that they're necessarily invalid) are that it's not what they expected/wanted out of Ride, but I've seen little critique of the music outright

well it's not what I wanted but the more alt rock leaning songs are pretty bad for alt rock songs imo, which was my main criticism. im not a big Ride fan even so although it didn't meet my expectations, that wasn't the main goal going into it. it just kinda fell flat I guess

I'm surprised the rating for this is a low as it is. Great album.

I'm not tbh. Slowdive's comeback album def overshadows this imo, which prob explains the lower score a bit

Just checked this out. Pretty good actually, but the production feels a bit neutered and the songwriting isn't terribly strong for the most part. It sounds more like a generic shoegaze/dream pop band than Ride ever did before though I can appreciate their trying some new things.
