"Let’s get one thing straight first: Linkin Park is – and has always been – a pop band."
Nope. One thing is having pop elements, another is being a pop band. And really, no one's trashing this for being pop. There's good pop music, and then there's trash. This is the latter no question.

Sowing, as much as I actually despise this album and have completely lost my interest in LP, I have to praise you for being somebody who had the guts to stand up and defend this. Great review.

There is good pop out there, but making a career out of pop rock doesn't excuse you to make stuff like this. Brave review though!

The thing, Sowing, is that if you define pop music to be a money grab by definition, so yeah, you can rate this album as shallow entertainment material, the same way you would for a Micheal Bay album.
Except that pop music isn't much about making cash-grabbing music that it is about making "popular music". I'm pretty sure that Björk or Kate Bush are pop artists. If you consider that they are selling out, then yeah, I see your point.

I don't hate this record because it's "different" or because the band has "changed" or anything to that effect. I hate this record because it is musically vapid. It barely even has a pulse. It's a pop record that doesn't even manage, at the very least, to be catchy. It's a one-note snooze-fest.

I genuinely don't compute how someone can think that this is better than ATS (and pretty much every LP release, but ATS in particular).
I respect your opinion though, Sowing. I'm puzzled by it, but I respect it and I enjoyed reading this review.

"I'll begrudgingly check this out because it can't be worse than new lil yachty and i gave that the time of day."
It's actually way, way, worse than Yachty's new album.

A very well written defense of Linkin Park's unapologetic embrace of a more mellow and simple type of pop music, IMO. But I disagree with the statement that Linkin Park has "always" been a pop band. I would say 5 of their 7 albums qualify as pop music, while A Thousand Suns and The Hunting Party are more niche, although the former has singles that may be radio friendly, especially Iridescent.
I'm curious as to where you'd rank this album among their entire discography. Here's my list:
A Thousand Sons: 9/10
Hybrid Theory: 8/10
The Hunting Party: 8/10
Living Things: 6/10
Meteora: 6/10
Minutes to Midnight: 5/10
One More Light: 5/10

"a fair and unbiased listen". if you truly were a pop fan, or at least had some knowledge about the genre, you would know this album does a really mediocre job at doing it well. opinions, though. i'm giving it a zero, quite a lot of them this year...

Don't think they actually "sold out" with this album, I mean they have stated themselves (very aggressively) that they did not make this album just to appeal to a bigger audience. Seems like they just felt like making generic, boring pop.

Yep, I'm pretty sure Bennington has stated that his favourite band of the past few years has been 21 Pilots, so I think that explains a lot lol

Didn't read the review but "there's definitely an over-sensationalized hatred towards this thing born double fold from disappointed fans and a hatred/lack of acceptance for pop music."
or it's just really bad pop music
