Many of my favorite folk records are drawn out and kind of full of themselves so this should be great actually

The early Elton John comparison is spot-on. In some places this sounds just like Tumbleweed Connection and/or Honky Chateau.

4's for both Fear Fun (still my favorite of his) and Honeybear. But this was a step down. Over indulgent. Sometimes its a good thing to have a filter on, and not just lavishly ejaculate all over your record, which is what he's done here.

I was actually pretty stoked about hearing it beforehand.

I'm curious klap, do you think this is the sort of thing where if the weakest 30 minutes worth of songs were cut to make it 45 minutes long it would be a much higher rating, say a 4, or are the problems continuous enough on a song to song basis that that wouldn't have made much of a difference?

review is really well written but it reads like a 2.5 and doesn't really make me want to check out the album.

Con I think it reads fine as a 3.1. He highlights a lot of positives amidst the negatives and I would say that the overall tone is reservedly positive as opposed to neutral as you'd expect from a 2.5.

haha love to be a contrarian huh Boney? Idk maybe it's because I mostly write positive reviews and this highlights many of the flaws of the album more so than the positives. It's really not a criticism of the review, just an observation tbh. But usually a 3(.1) review should give me some incentive to check out the album but this one doesn't really imo.
