that is a dark place

"it's a 3.5-4 like everything else they've ever made"
Agreed. I was going to rate this 3.5, but after repeated listens including the limited edition bonus track, I decided to rate it 4 and call it a day. I think that bonus song balances things out, and adds much needed melody to the album. Even though I understand why some folks aren't digging this, I gotta say it's the best they've released since Sci-Fi Crimes (IMO) and it's probably one of, if not the best, sounding records of theirs. Barressi really delivered with the production here (bar Enemies).
hmmm, to me it would go differently
wonder what's next
this type of thinking
sci-fi crimes
point#1 (very underrated I think)
the north corridor
vena sera
la gargola

Thanks man. I like vena sera and la gargola just as much probably, but hottb is definitely their worst, and the first four are by far their best IMO.
band is ridiculously consistent.

I don't understand the 2.5-3 ratings, but I guess such polarizing opinions makes things interesting.
For me, La Gargola, This Type of Thinking and Vena Sera are their best albums.

Good review btw. I'm not even sure this will grow on me. This is just bland heavy nickelback.
This is what people hear when they call this band butt rock. Wtf Pete?

@insomniac15
For me it's the lack of interesting melody. There's some really nice, heavy groove, but there isn't a lot that stands out to me. "Young Wicked" is an f--n beast of a track though.

Bland heavy Nickelback??
Thou must be executed at once!
Naaah, Nickelback won't ever be anywhere close to these guys.

I don't hear any growls? Only hollow screams, and they've been present in all their albums to some extent.
Either way I'm not fussed about the intensity of the vocals, Ive always preferred their more melodic numbers - The Red, Vitamin R, Saferwaters etc. If I want heavy music I'll listen to a heavy band, not Chevelle. These guys are good for easy listening as with most bands in the genre.

I'm only vaguely familiar with Chevelle, but from the songs I've heard they sound like genric alt rock/nu metal band. This review makes them sound really interesting though, maybe I'll check it out.

Wow this is a heavy Chevelle album.

Didn't even notice that, brilliant
I await the day when this whole band's discography actually levels out at 3.8

I hope the avg for this stays at 4.1, or at least 4
