Calc man I don't hate it but it's def a weaker track for me. Music is real tight but it doesn't really go anywhere and the melodies in the chorus aren't that great.

vantablack and to a lesser extent drift are somewhat weak on their own. love em in the context of the album though. they break up the chaos really well

^I agree yeah. While listening to the whole album Drift fits in just fine

The lead singer's hooks are still pretty awkward sometimes
I mean what even is the chorus of Connecting Hexes

Honestly I absolutely love Drift though. It almost reminds me of a proggy version of a song that would be on Aesop Rock's last album lmao

Every single song on this album is a grower. After my first listen I knew I had to listen more to come to a conclusion, and it's only gotten more enjoyable the more I listen. Every track has tons of depth and there is just tons to find through repeated listens. I don't know if it's better than LYE, but at first I thought there was no way but now it's definitely contending with it.
I thought Drift was mediocre at first, but now I see that it has a lot of atmosphere, it's catchy, that nice little ride cymbal fill is sweet, and the bass line is just fantastic. Every track has these little things I'm finding. And really there are only two songs I wouldn't consider "heavy" overall.

I've been digging this a lot, lots of variation in this album. It's an interesting evolution from LYE. @Calc, I liked Vantablack fine. Like others have said, I think that it, Drift, and Strange Graves have their place on the album to break it up, give it a bit of breathing room. Vantablack is probably my favorite of those three though, I wouldn't listen to the other two outside of a full run-through of the album

I like Drift more than Vantablack, although the outro of Strange Graves is really awesome I think. They actually nailed the atmospheric element there, which is something a lot of punk, metal, or even rock bands often fail to do.
I think people will warm up to this record as time goes on if they give it a few more listens, it really is an epitome of a "grower" for me.

overall I think LYE was better but phoenix III is definitely one of their best songs. better than phoenix II imo

I have literally the exact opposite reaction haha. I like this a fair bit more on average than LYE but Phoenix 2 is one of the band's best songs easily

Anyone else think the bass is just a little bit too high in the mix ? I'm all for a prominent bass but I feel like it's a bit overpowering in the heavy tracks. Works well in songs like "Drift" though.

the production is great. the mix is off

the mix isn't that bad. It's just that the mix on LYE was SO tight. Everything was so clear. The bass was prominent but not overwhelming. This is a step down. All the effects and sounds themselves are great, they just aren't fitting together well.

yeah that's a fair distinction. I don't have any problems with the mix either I guess
