I've never heard anything from this band which warrants higher than a 2.5. Saw them live a few years ago and was very unimpressed.

Not really sure I would call this "experimental" more than "playing it safe". This is very much them simplyifiying their sound because they want commercial success.

As the past three records have been.

This is one band I've never been able to get into. I'll check this one out but I'm not terribly hopeful.

It would better to start with one of the earlier records (namely Ascendancy or Shogun)

Sadly I've listened to them all at least a few times; just never really cared for them. I was thinking if this was different I may give it a chance.

Growing up in New England we had Shadow's Fall, KSE, Overcast, BHBS, 100 Demons, etc. Didn't really catch the Trivium wave per say.

Don't expect a game of Trivium Pursuit to be made anytime soon.

I'm tempted to bump this up to a 3.5, but I feel like I would give this album too much credit. The choruses are just so catchy though.

This is a step in the right direction. Lack of screaming isn't the problemi here, t's the inconsistent songwriting that's been around since In Waves.
Ever since Travis left they have been trying to streamline their sound but never really had the ability to fill up a whole album with short, well written songs.
Shogun was a fantastic album and this feels like the closest we've gotten to it since then.

Toondude, my comment on Mat, I am pretty sure he had no creative input on this record. Nick didn't have any on In Waves when he was new blood. Plus, he wasn't interviewed in the making of documentary.

They need a drummer that is actually part of the band instead of the the two who were more or less just hired hands. It shows tho, Travis fit the band perfectly.

Album is a snooze fest and has no redeeming qualities. Heafy sounds like his voice is shot, riffs are boring and predictable, songs are slow and predictable. Sounds like Metallica and Disturbed's bastard offspring. Amazed how high the average rating is.
