There are similarities between their first two, as well as between their latest three, other than that they're all pretty diverse and distinctive.

"Pistol" sounds like a demented attempt at techno and it's glorious

i dunno, there is a progression, but it is slight between each album and its successor. all modest mouse is very... modest mouse for me, this being the most derivative in that sense

"Sugar Boats" has given me a headache every time I've tried to listen to it. The rest of this is...alright, I guess? The back half drags for me a lot but the ending trio of songs is still great. "Pistol" is one of those "so awful it's great" tracks for me. Will probably bump to a 3.5 after a few more listens.

His voice is certainly prolific, that hasn't changed much throughout their releases. Starting with Building/Moon & Antarctica they certainly had a more polished sound that is still continuing. I see their career as being separated by those two eras, separated by those two releases.

My favourite track off this is God Is An Indian..

It's been stuck in my head for ages.

Good News was very polished but it was still amazing, this just seems a little out of ideas.

They've been polished for 15 years though, I don't think anyone was seriously expecting the sound of Long Drive or Interstate 8

Yea Pistol is beautifully bad. There's really nothing I dislike about this record, but nothing is really as outside of the box like TLCW or TMAA for me.

disagreed, they've been moving towards that sure, but the production was never over polished enough to bother me until this

There's a difference between strong production and over production.

Weird I thought TMAA was pretty polished.

I'm prob in the minority here, but that record, Good News and TLCW are about equal in quality for me. This is definitely a step downward, but still very enjoyable. I only wish they wouldn't release another one so fast like they said they would :/
