Every time I read through a Pitchfork review my mind inevitably goes to "Which pretentious hipster wrote this?"

i like both albums and the approach is different but can't understand how LP1 gets 8.8 and this 5. that's a huge discrepancy.

and i wonder just how great the influence is of a negative review like that.

Coming from someone who went to the same school at the same time as Banks and didn't realise it until later, you don't get to talk to me about not appreciating something sir!

Summary makes me think the songs from the EP have been changed for the album ... I hope this is this case

It's a line from 'Waiting Game' dude

Would be interested to hear how you compare FKA Twigs to Banks, or which you prefer; for me Twigs does it a lot better with a lot more sparse production, plus it seems a lot more congruent - I feel like Banks is too much of a production, a face - compare her videos to her live shows, where she seems kind of lost and not in control.

She seems to be in control here, though I think it might take awhile to balance the intimate nature of her music with a large setting. As for the comparison - I think they approach their music from similar circumstances. They both represent an electronic approach to both pop and r&b, but where Banks toes the line in regards to rhythm and blues, FKA has a more minimal and, at times, oddball take on the sound. I get the comparison, but I'm not so sure it's wholly accurate. As it stands though, Banks all the way. Girl's a gem

that recent FKA Twigs album. each to their own. i just don't see there being such a drastic difference in quality and i wonder the extent of the impact that kind of review has from a source that reaches so many.

it can work in similar ways here but on a smaller scale. Deviant reviews this very favourably so lots of us are inclined to at the very least listen to it. if he gave it a 2.5, it's possible/pretty likely a lot of us would pass over it and not give it a chance.

As far reaching as their audience might be, I'm also sure that a good chunk of that audience is somewhat jaded and indifferent to the site

i'm not so sure. can only speculate. we on Sputnik could pick at their reviews and fit that jaded/indifferent vibe but I dunno if we're reflective of their audience. what percentage would take it as gospel and just pass over every record rated below a certain threshold?

i understand that's how the game goes but it's not the only occasion of late that I've felt an artist has been fairly hard done by, when a different but comparable recent release has been showered with praise.

Basically what I mean is is that everyone I know who has a passing interest in music journalism (and this includes IRL people as well, not just sputnik confederates) will always see what Pitchfork has to say, but it's never to make a judgement call on whether or not to actually listen to the release, but go there knowing that they'll probably get something of a different take. Truthfully, a lot of them go there almost begrudgingly

No site should be treated as gospel, no matter how ingrained in pop/music culture they become. In the wake of instant access to music and blogging, your Rolling Stones and whathaveyou's don't hold as much influence as they once did. It sucks that Pitchfork didn't praise the album, but the percentage of people who will now avoid the album because of that review is marginal at best

Meh, I'm German - we've endured (and partially continue to endure) worse. Schlager and German TV give you a thick skin. As for the review, I just don't believe that reviews should read like something somebody scribbled together in his poetry or literary class - particularly in terms of throwing around vague verbiage.
