'July' is a great example of an album that hovers somewhere between good and great. I genuinely
couldn't decide where in the spectrum it fell until I had listened to it several times.
The opening piece 'Drive' and 'Was it a dream' are both excellent (easily the two best songs on
the album) and '1923', 'We are coming back' and 'Dead city Emily' are all very good indeed.
Unfortunately a lot of the album never attempts to be anything more than 'sweet sounding female
folk artist by numbers' and the album as a whole has quite a samey sound.
The songs arrangements, recording and production is impressive. In an age when 100% of everything
on the radio sounds like it was arranged and recorded by a computer it is refreshing to listen to
recordings of music played by real human beings on real instruments.
Parts of this album are merely very nice and easily forgettable but at it's best it is quite simply
beautiful.

I actually agree with most of that. This really impresses me every time I listen to it, but for some reason I don't really feel inclined to rate it any higher.

^^
That's kind of how I feel about the album as well. It's very good and well written and Nadler's vocals are beautiful. But it never really is more than that. That doesn't make it a bad album, just kind of one that could have been more. However, the great tracks on this one are fucking great.

I know her songs are supposed to be atmospheric, slow etc. and I usually like this stuff but it slowly starts to bore me. Especially in the singer/songwriter direction, there are so many similarities.. Actually, it wouldn't even bother me if the music was more unique or creative but idk man. Guess I expected something different.

This album is great but I think the producer deserves half the credit for that . . . Maybe seeing her live in a couple of weeks, but wondering what she is like without all the atmospheric production.

"Her set was all of July, 55 Falls, and then a medley of Bruce Springsteen's I'm on Fire into Townes Van Zandt's Tecumseh Valley back into I'm on Fire for the encore."
that sounds utterly perfect. I'm listening to this for the first time and it sound pretty good so far
