I think this soundtrack is still a powerful and grandiose one, even if it isn't up there with Hans Zimmer's best work. People seem very divided on the quality of the movie itself, despite its flaws I loved it

Powerful, grandiose, yeah, I'd agree. Effectual, riveting, certainly not.

soundtrack fits the movie but is verrrry dull outside of that.

The only instance, so far, that Nolan and Zimmer have produced is Inception, because elements of that score are actually very poignant and in some way tied to the plot of that film. But these Batman scores while perhaps fitting for Nolan's industrial Gotham landscape just wind-up in jarring, overt works that Zimmer has been making since 1995.

I think you're generalising here, for every bombastic and timpani-heavy tune in these films there's a more melancholic and personal one

And Why So Serious has got to be the one of the most accurate musical representations of a character in history

It's not about the heavy/soft ratio, it's the usage, and their relative effectiveness. And talking about generalisations, saying Why So Serious? is one of the most accurate musical representations is a stretch, given he's used a very similar formative structure for pieces in Pirates, and another film I cannot quite remember the name of right now.

Yeah I am a major soundtrack junkie for new or old. But when asked about my favourites I can never generate anything more than "I like scores that I like". There are composers, like Zimmer who do both excellent work, and terrible work. Williams and Horner too have done excellent and unexciting work. Shore has done 3 (possibly 6) fantastic scores but the rest are uninteresting. I guess I just don't have any particular favourite as a result. Sorry for being a fence sitter.

This is enjoyable, though I can see the gripes people may have with it. Nothing terribly memorable here, but there's enough fun moments to work for good reading/background music.

Which as ambient noise works quite well; a lot of music is just loud thuds and crashes these days it seems.
