Yeah this rules face. I'm pretty much a fanboy for anything SOTL but this is still super chill.

Shame, man.
I'm surprised at the lack of 5's. Is it now not cool to give them out or something when dealing with ambient?
Cos I just did a review for Mayday Parade's new album, which was awful, and people are 5-ing that.

There is much better ambient and modern classical out there. I just don't feel like the two were integrated as well as they could have been here.

I wouldn't really know when it comes to modern classical, I haven't really delved into it (though plan to soon).
But on the ambient front I find this LP to be quite a bit better to the competition. If you reckon there's something better could you link it? Then I can see for myself (that wasn't a confrontational statement, I'm perfectly prepared to hold my hands up and admit I was wrong if needs be, though I doubt I'll have to)

it's just that most people reserve "classic" ratings for albums that they feel are actually "classic". this is a great ambient album but doesn't really revolutionize anything or particularly stand out enough for a perfect rating

well lots of people here are really dumb so yeah

@psykonaut: Surely there's a line to toe there, I mean you never know if an album truly is classic until it's been out for a few years. So then what's the use of having the rating if you can't use it for certain albums regardless of how good they are?
But I guess people can draw the line where they like, personally this is the best album of the year for me, so not giving it the best rating seems... odd. Don't you think?

this is good, not a 5/5

Ambient just from this year that I'd recommend:
Tim Hecker - Ravedeath, 1972
Aidan Baker - Only Stories
Aidan Baker - Still Life
Aidan Baker - Plague of Fantasies
Grouper - A I A
Deaf Center - Owl Splinters
The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble - From the Stairwell
The Mount Fuji Doomjazz Corporation - Anthropomorphic
Black Swan - The Quiet Divide

Oo didn't realise Grouper had a new one out. Anyway, will check out the ones I don't know and get back
to you.
From what I know: Deaf Center is good, not quite as good as this though and I'm not really a fan of
Aiden Baker's use of percussion.
(What does m/ mean?)

yeah i'll probably check this out

One of the best records of the year. Painfully beautiful stuff. I missed the step in human history when an album being straightforward and emotional became a reason to detract from it. If anything, the sparsity and somewhat minimalist approach serves only to heighten the intense spiritual undertones of the album. People on this website are far too concered with their objectivity scores. It's a perfect album for me, so I rated it a 5; it needn't be groundbreaking nor revolutionary to be classic. Great review, Stranger. I'm with you.

By the way Angel, Tim Hecker's Ravedeath, 1972 is amazing. I saw that on your list on the previous page. Such a strong, cool album. Also, Mister Tornado has been turning me on to Leyland Kirby and his side project, The Caretaker. The latter is an especially cool album, driven by a loose concept of the stucture of memory and also inspired by the lounge scene in The Shining.
