i love you. i think you and i are the only 2 people in the world who believe this!

personally, i wasn't a huge fan of Lateralus and 10,000 Days just bored me. there were a couple of decent songs on each, but Opiate and Undertow own them. i don't get how "old Tool" gets annoying?

Because production = suckage

Music = too straightforward and boring

Maynard's vox = nowhere as good as they are now

^^ WHAT?!?! fyi, crack is whack

1) wtf, who cares about the production?? it's not like they were unlistenable; the songs were extremely well-written and unlike ANYTHING that was being produced at the time, not to mention the fact that the delivery as a whole was way more intense than that of their later stuff. there is so much more emotion on the 2 albums than on anything else they've released since

2) oh yeah, sooooooooo straight-forward. considering Lateralus and Aenimahad how much airplay compared to these? plus those are way more watered-down and predictable TOOL albums than anything else. at least Opiate and Undertow were original and broke some decent ground.

3) HELL no. his voice was so much stronger then and conveyed so much more emotion than their newer stuff.

case in point: old TOOL owns new TOOL. end of story

I wouldn't say that at all. Tool are pretty open about taking inspiration from King Crimson and a whole host of 70's-80's rock acts like Black Sabbath, Blue Cheer, etc. And 10,000 Days has plenty of emotional songs... half the album was about his mother who had passed away, not to mention I dare you to find one song that hits the rage and intensity of "The Grudge" or especially "Ticks And Leeches". Maynard couldn't even speak for a month after tracking that song.

2) oh yeah, sooooooooo straight-forward. considering Lateralus and Aenimahad how much airplay compared to these? plus those are way more watered-down and predictable TOOL albums than anything else. at least Opiate and Undertow were original and broke some decent ground.

Airplay has absolutely nothing to do with an album being good or not, let alone it's structure. Please try finding anything resembling a conventional pop song structure anywhere on Lateralus other than "Schism", which can't even be called poppy or radio-friendly at any rate. It sounds nothing like anything on the radio. It doesn't change the fact that Opiate and Undertow are about as straightforward rock as it gets. There's none of the time-sig craziness of "Ticks And Leeches", the guitar work is uninspiring, Danny Carey's beats are simple as f*ck, Maynard's vox aren't anywhere as varied or mature as their newer stuff, and Paul D'Amour has NOTHING on Justin Chancellor.

3) HELL no. his voice was so much stronger then and conveyed so much more emotion than their newer stuff.

Old Maynard could have NEVER sung the heavier parts on Lateralus, especially the minute-long scream on "The Grudge". His vox simply aren't as nuanced or as mature as their newer stuff. Tool doesn't ALWAYS have to be heavy and hard to write great music.

case in point: old TOOL owns new TOOL. end of story

Not really!

What are you calling "Old tool"? If your saying opiate and undertow classifiy 'old tool" and that those albums showcase a better vocal performance from Maynard, you are a moron.

Hush has an awesome bass line.

Kinda wish Tool would bring back some of their heavy metal sound and then fuse that prog metal. :D
