^I agree with that.

He’s never been the best singer in the world, or even the room, generally speaking, but there was always a brilliant spark in his songs that just reeked of sincerity and heart.

yeah you were right first time imo - changing it to 'has always been' sort of implies there still is, which is the exact opposite of your point.

He'd have to change the first part to "He was never..." then.

Really not sure about that, since they're independent clauses in a compound sentence. Ambiguity could

be better avoided by saying "there always used to be a brilliant spark..." rather than "there was

always," since the temporal contrast is actually the main point of the sentence. Removing that

contrast totally destroys the author's point.

Also yeah the "Hear ye!" section of I Still Believe is cool, dammit.

I'm primarily interested in the emotional aspect of music, but Turner's music has always struck a chord deep within me because of his flair for language, and that flair is not apparent here. The reason for leading with the guitar thing was to add punch as much as anything - he isn't a brilliant singer, but his songs have something brilliant in them; his skill as a musician isn't exceptional, but his lyricism is. That was the main idea with the first paragraph. I was trying to brush aside the instrumentation, then bring it back in the conclusion to add context to what is left of his former style. The music was always a background, but without the lyrical quality it's pushed to the forefront. Tbh, I know nothing about the technicalities of guitar playing, so wouldn't know where to look.

It's true I've never heard 'Hear Ye!' in a song - but the tone is still cliched. Before he sounded like an English guy, writing about real stuff in a way no one else was doing at the time. The refrain from 'I Still Believe' is Dick van Dyke-I'm-a-right-old-cockney-who's-heard-a-bit-of-Shakespeare Ingerlish.

No where near as bad as you say it is, but it is dissapointing nonetheless...
