for an artist that has three albums that I consider classic, I don't know why I don't have this.

I really agree that you can't talk about Elliott Smith with people who've never heard his music, at least on some levels.
Also, how do you all you fans treat Elliott Smith tunes with respect to your friends etc.? When people ask me who my favs. are, I almost always omit ES (even though he is a favorite of mine), probably because it's too personal, too revealing of who I am, I think, and with most people, that's a road I don't want to go down.
Also, it's sort of blasphemous to the whole ES experience, to mention things so technical, but it has to be said, he's got to be one of the best guitarists of all time. I'm still never sure how he can play essentially two parts at once so fluidly. Before the days of youtube, I was sure alot of his stuff was overdubbed. Now I know, it might be, but he could play the whole arrangement if he felt like it.

^Undoubtedly has my vote as one of the best to EVER pick up a guitar. Going Nowhere is just nuts as far as I'm concerned.

Really nice 100th Rudy! I only have Roman Candle, but I've been digging it a lot.

I will definitely read this later, but I'm sure it's good. I love this album.

Excellent review. Suppose I really should listen to this then, although I doubt any Elliott Smith record will top Roman Candle for me.

What should I start with?

That's the thing. You can pretty much start anywhere with e.smith. I'd imagine most people would recommend starting off with either Either/Or or XO, though. I'd recommend starting with XO.

That's good, because that's the one I put on my ipod about a week ago, so I'll just take a listen after Mr. Bungle is done. Thanks for the rec.

I'd say Either Or, that's what I started with

This is the best starter IMO. Either/Or and XO are classics in their own right, but this comes across as best in accessibility

I don't know about calling this elliotts most accessible album... I'd personally call it his least accessible. first timers seem more drawn in by either/or and basement on a hill, this was just his most commercially successful, which means it was marketed well.
but don't get me wrong, it's a favourite album of mine.
