That's awesome. I always enjoy listening to Metropolis and Under a Glass Moon back to back, one of my favorite moments throughout their whole discography.

A Change of Seasons is the best Dream Theater song. They really should make that one the blueprint for making future albums.
Looking forward to that Awake review tiesthatbind. Although I'm predicting the weak link is once agian the ballad type song Lifting Shadows off a Dream (just like Another Day on Images)... amirite

As far as a least favorite on Awake, I'm not sure, there's not really a song I single out as weakest right now. It might be LSoaD, but I do like the song. Some people can't stand DT ballads, but they can be quite good at times.
I'm going to for sure listen to Awake several more times as I'm working on the review, although I'm sure it will stay at a (very strong) 4.

i think awake is a perfect 5 as well. moore showed some real beauty in the lyrics and the songwriting quality is top-knotch.

The songwriting is definitely top-notch. I will be sure not to put out the review until I have given it a bit more time, I haven't given Awake the amount of listening I've given to most of their other albums.

Lifting Shadows off a Dream is actually one of my favorite songs from the album, or the band for that matter. I feel it's really important for the flow of the album, seeing as it comes right after two of the heaviest tracks and the transition into Scarred is just perfect. Also amazing bass line from John Myung, so hypnotizing/transcending.
But yea give the album some more listens and maybe it may reveal itself ;)

Awake works well as an album, I can't say any of the songs really could be cut because the flow is really good. Thing is, it's consistently high-quality, it just doesn't quite reach the highs of Images or Scenes IMO and at times I find it drags a little. But don't get me wrong, I do find it excellent, hence the 4 rating.
I will definitely give it time.

Fair enough. Although one should consider that these, although similar in some ways, are quite different albums. The highs on Images you're referring to, which I agree with, wouldn't seem likely to appear on a darker album such as Awake. But I get what you're saying.

They are different albums, and I'm certainly not saying Awake needed more wild guitar solos or long instrumentals, it works well as a darker album focused on songwriting.

Exactly. Also worth mentioning is that Awake is 18 minutes longer than Images. Probably why some find it to be a little samey or dragging. Personally it doesn't bother me. It's nice with a long journey.

@tiedthatbind, People dont like DT ballads usually because of Labrie, but I think that he fits well with ballads, however, he is the one blemish in DT, he sings the heavier songs sometimes as if they are ballads, because hey, he was originally the singer for a GLAM band. DT is awesome, despite what elitists say, even though they are inconsistent. Everything they have from the 90's besides Falling into Infinity is fantastic, though they have been either excellent or REALLY SUCKY this decade. Black Clouds is awesome and their best since Scenes IMO. And this is their best album.

I do enjoy LaBrie's vocals most of the time. He just takes getting used to. He's gotten good at singing heavier songs.
And I'm staying out of the drumming debate.

I only argue if I'm sure I know what I'm talking about. I love Portnoy's drumming, but I don't have the knowledge to say how he compares to other high-class drummers. I wouldn't say he's the best though, that's a very bold statement.
