A word of advice: smug-ness never improved anyone's writing. Spamue1's last paragraph pretty much summarizes why everyone is bashing your review. It just feels throughout like you haven't given it a fair chance. There are better ways to write a negative review, especially for an album that is so well-respected by a community. You're entitled to your own opinion, of course, but if it's going to be an unpopular one, we strongly encourage you to be able to defend it eloquently. When writing reviews like this one, the bar is raised infinitely higher than normal as far as expected quality for the review.

Edit: Wait. You only listened to this once???This Message Edited On 03.25.09

My opinions on albums become irrelevant when judging reviews. I can disagree with a review and still like the review if its well written. This is not such a case, unfortunatley.

Lol then your opinion is unfounded. If you think you can grasp a complex and dense album like this one after two listens and then write an informed review about it, then you deserve to be bashed.

This album was a grower for me, you just need to give it a few more spins before judging it.

it's my first review, but i know now not to pick one that's held so high up. people are looking completely passed everything i wrote to look for typo's, which i find kind of funny.

It's not impossible to write a negative review for a popular album. Go and read Ross Tomlin's review of this one, it's a pretty good example of how to go about it. As people like NOTINTHEFACE have said, though, you've gotta come with your A-game, can't half-ass it at all or you'll get destroyed.

By the way, two listens isn't really enough to justify writing a review for ANY album, whether Cynic or Simple Plan. This Message Edited On 03.25.09

I don't particularly agree with all the bashing. He hasn't rated anything else yet but there's a good possibilty that he's still very new to this type of music and he possibily still assumes that all music is instant (hence, the two listens and review mentallity... which a lot of people here have with streaming albums, btw). Second, his review does lack a lot of neccessary detail but it's also his first and if it was done on a worse album people might point out the lack of detail, but it wouldn't go this far. Third, it seems alot of first-time reviewers don't really grasp the level of writing people hope to see from reviews so they do post their first one without much regard to grammar, etc. because they're thinking more along the lines of a blog-like mentallity. To the reviewer, shake it off and write a second review. Just remember some of the constructive things people mentioned. I'll wait for your next review to form an opinion.

Dude don't worry about it, for a first its pretty good, people are just being harsher because it is a popular record. Your writing skills will improve exponentially if you keep up with the reviewing, I know mine did.

Edit: Oh and for the record, grammar and spelling are pretty important, think of a review as an essay instead of, to take Willie's example, a blog post. Microsoft Word/Open Office are great for this. This Message Edited On 03.25.09

Lol I'm glad to see you're taking all this criticism to heart. At any rate, as Masochist said, two listens isn't enough to justify a review of even the simplest albums. You're just making it clear that you're unfamiliar with the genre and therefore don't really have the authority to be making such bold negative claims about it, so therefore, you have no right to be so defensive when people start criticizing you. Grow a pair, take the advice people are giving you, and try reviewing an album you're a little more familiar with. And cut the smug snobbery. That just puts you on the level of the same people who are bashing you for spelling errors.

two full listens? in my book it is. who sits there and says 'okay, i'm going to have to listen to this at least 5+ times in order to like it'? i've loved albums after 1 or two listens, this one was still terrible after two. the funniest thing is that if i gave this a 5 and still came off as ignorant as you say, no one, probably including you would call me on it.

I do. I don't rate anything until I've given it at least 4 or 5 listens. That's why, in my profile, I have about 160 some ratings, but I've probably heard around 400 or so.This Message Edited On 03.25.09

Sputnik has declined so much lately, it's ridiculous. Specifically some of the users and the increasing depths of snobbery taking place. I found this review to also be upsetting but i'm not going to say much because I don't feel it necessary.

yah, NOTINTHEFACE is absolutely right. Just don't give up because you got negged a few times. Next time write a review about an album that you like and put some detail in it, use a spellcheck to eliminate all the big errors and that's it. the rest will come by itself. Like Willie said, your writing skills will grow when you just keep writing. Man my first was pretty bad also, lacked detail and had terrible grammar, but I've learned from that, I have taken the constructive criticism other users gave me and now people say that I'm a pretty good writer. So don't give up man, if you like to write than have another go at it sometime.

While I agree (to an extent) with your opinion - I think Traced in Air is good but forgettable, and is far from the best album of 2008 - the review could have been written better. I had a similar experience when I was first starting out - although I didn't write a review lambasting a popular album, I made comments on a review that did so (Circle Takes the Square, to be specific). And of course, I received massive public humiliation, people said that I didn't like it because I hadn't listened to it, because I was unfamiliar with the genre, etc.

Numerous listens later, with a fairly in-depth experience with screamo, I still don't like it, but that's a different topic.

But anyway, just keep on writing reviews, take what little constructive criticism you've gotten here (I praise the people who had high opinions of this album but didn't flame you) and apply that to what else you've got.

Ahh...I do. Some albums are like that, where it takes time to really understand them. For me, it was that way for Thrice's "The Artist in the Ambulance." I'd heard that c.d. plenty of times back when it came out and all my friends were spinning it, but I only REALLY got it this year. I hear people talk all the time about Converge's "Jane Doe" and CTTS's "As The Roots Undo" taking weeks of time and/or 10+ listens before it clicks, and then it becomes their favorite album. It's just how some albums are.

Or, you might never grow to love it. Who's to say?

But it's suggested that you listen to an album more than once or twice before writing a review not so that you can see if you end up liking it, but so that you can know it well enough to write an informed review and back up your opinions with specific examples from the c.d. (lyrics, guitar licks, etc.). The more you know an album, the more it sounds like you know what you're talking about, and the more people will agree with the review even if they don't agree with the opinion.

By the way...if you were to publish a badly-written review agreeing with the consensus of a popular album, people would probably call you out on it. You'd receive comments like, "I agree with the review, but it was terribly written," etc. This Message Edited On 03.25.09
