Man, their early stuff is such a masterful exercise in minimalism in rock music. They got so much out of so little and really worked each element for all its worth. Love how they manage to make something as simple as those occasional acoustic strums in "Swingin'" sound so massive.

You said it my friend. It’s amazing how massive Lullaby is considered how “little” they do in it.

Most of the current acts in the genre really don’t get it. The style is at peak popularity but so much of it now is just thin bedroom stuff that sounds great but goes for vibes over substance.

Yeah I’m referring to slowcore. There’s a pretty big revival scene happening now, mostly inspired by Duster since they’ve really blown up in the past 5-10 years.

Duster is good. How did they blow up? Just word of mouth or a soundtrack?

They were already gaining notoriety on the Internet in the mid to late 10s and then TikTok blew em up even more. They have over 4 million monthly listeners on Spotify now lol. They’re good but prob my least favorite of the big slowcore bands tbh because of that more vibey sound. Most of the modern slowcore stuff is good, it’s one of those styles I almost always enjoy, just doesn’t often hit as hard as the 90s/00s stuff. I put Ethel Cain at the top of the pack for taking an approach that actually modernizes and progresses the style (to the point that many don’t even think she is slowcore but I think she is, at least as much as she is anything else).

Niiice, you literally described me and most post rock: almost always enjoys it but doesn’t usually hit as hard as 90s-00s stuff.

And yeah Ethel Cain rules.

Yeah that makes sense, there’s a lot of overlap between post-rock and slowcore obviously.

Check 40 Watt Sun if you haven’t.
