did you actually listen to the whole thing? kinda hard to if you hate it, i know. there are a few gems on here for those that aren't with the whole junkie john/scream your guts out thing. i love 'height down'...try that?
|
| |
Height Down is probably the easiest to dig yeah cos River Phoenix is singing instead of junkie John

hah...true
RIP river.

TommyGun man!
I've only heard one of two songs from this...I really really can't stomach John's first two records. He was really messed up.
|
| |
WhiteNoise what's up dude? Yeah this one is mostly junkie trash but I still dig a lot of the songs. Niandra might be
more your style, he actually recorded most of it in the mansion when they were making BSSM so before he was even
on heroin. It's still not very accessible I just find myself drawn to it for some reason haha. Different strokes and all that.

larry: i did listen to it all, but only once (i couldn't stomach it a second time). it's really
unlistenable/incoherent 90% of the time. it sounds like a drunken, jumbled mess - the vocals moreso
than anything else (and not in a pub-band titus andronicus kind of way, more in a pathetic drunken
stupor). i felt kind of embarrassed for him at several points.
sorry if that sounds really scathing, but i think the fact that this was created solely for drug money
speaks volumes.

Yeah I can dig Niandra when i'm in the mood. I just gave Height down a listen though and it's quite brillaint.
|
| |
his other albums would have to be at least a thousand times better than this to interest me.
|
| |
You can't compare them to this really, they're extremely different. You would never pick that it was the same guy making them if you didn't already know.
|
| |
this and niandra lades are weird as shit dude, listen to his later stuff, it's a lot less weird
|
| |
Niandra rules I don't care what anyone says.
@Darth - hahaha you are too kind my friend.
|
| |
hey i didn't say it was bad, it's just not exactly accessible
|
| |
Yeah man I hear ya, I wasn't having a go! I agree it's a long way from being accessible.
|
| |
i've only heard a few tracks off of this and niandra lades, so i should probably give them at least proper listens. god john was so insane lol
|
| |
Yeah man there is some really great stuff on Niandra. He was fucked up, check out the VPRO interview he did in '94 the whole thing is on youtube it's some crazy shit.

that interview actually helped me grasp this album in a way. at least you get a sense of where this guy was coming from and how he lived his life at the time. its like a story, which of course is a pretty shit story to some of us, but i like this album keeping in mind the circumstance, and where he is today.

His first two albums, to me, are an insight to a mad genius struggling with himself and addiction. There may not be a lot of redeeming music here (that being said as some have mentioned there's still some gems on here), but in order to really "get" these albums is to look past the music and see the picture they paint of a man insane
|
| |
That's very true dude. I found I could understand and enjoy his first two a lot more after I found out more of the story behind them. They aren't something I just put on to chill to but in the right settings they absolutely blow my mind.
