Born in Winter is better than everything on this album, and i feel like that's the direction they were trying to go.

Not really dude, I understand why some people would see this as quite a vacant release tho.

"RIP Gojira"

Nah. This is probably my favorite metal release this year so far, but my metal tastes have also softened with age, so that's probably worth taking with a grain of salt.

Rating may drop slightly.

I think a lot of people are quick to misconstrue openness and a reduction in technicality as a less-potent product rather than a streamlined one.

Agreed, I think scaling back the technicalities has only worked in this bands favor. This album feels very composed in the best way possible. This approach is what I initially came to love about Gojira on their last album and is something they only seem to improve upon imo with this release.

It's not that this is streamlined, it's just that it's boring. The band has stripped away just about everything that made them interesting in the first place.

¯_(ツ)_/¯

What is it that "made them interesting in the first place" that you view to be lacking in this release?
