half the album is vaguely endearing amateurish clutter and wince-inducing poetry and the other half is kinda special (and both halves are often on show at the same time). Pale Folklore clears this for ropey earlydays Agalloch, but the next two albums were where they really got their shit together

Pale folklore, ashes, and Marrow are all better but this has some bright spots. Great cold death of the earth is one of their best songs

^yes! Easily the best folk-oriented song here and the perfect wrap-up (Desolation Song is an epilogue/basically a bonus track for me)

"this has some bright spots" as if it's not the best folk metal album this side of Bergtatt (the other side is Verisakeet and Arntor)

I actually prefer this to Bergtatt

This is in my top 10 albums of all time, but I rarely ever listen to it (maybe once every year or two) because it makes me too sad

bergtatt is the only good folk metal ive heard cuz its not a cheese fest like verisakeet

pretty dire subgenre although id be happy for someone to prove me wrong
