I agree that Topographic Oceans is what you said but I would say Lizard is up there as well.

Also I agree that wankery is not the same thing as prog excess. Topographic Oceans, for example, is very prog-excessive - 4 long form, multi-part suites, extended instrumental sections, "mystic" lyrics etc., but with the possible exception of the first half of "The Ancient" there's no wank at all: it's all VERY melodic.

Wank is when Deep Purple do a 10-minute drum solo or Petrucci does a 20-minute non-melodic guitar solo that sounds like music from Mario Bros sped up. It has no purpose at all other than show off the players' skills.

Nailed it.
I can't stand anything overly-technical for an extended period of time, especially when it's a showoff-y as DT

So, from what I've found out, Cirkus and the "Dawn Song" section of Lizard (Jon Anderson's part) is now in the band's setlist for their current tour. Fracture and "Heroes" are also back in the setlist for the first time since 1974 and 2001, respectively.

Heroes? Nice. Dude, that would be awesome if they actually got Jon Anderson.

Would love to hear how they turned out, but no recordings have surfaced yet - though the tour just started two weeks ago.

something about a 70 year old man doing an instrumental that he hasn't performed live in over forty years, and the fact he even considers it the most difficult song he has ever played, really gets to me

bet it sounds fucking amazing
