That might be wise. At this point I prefer Explosions's side project anyway.

Still pretty shocked by the lack of discussion.

This album and Those Who Tell the Truth is a mandatory listen for anyone who is in to post-rock. This is not Godspeed, this is not Mogwai, this is something else. This album can be a disaster if not listened to throughout and should be appreciated as a whole. Playing single tracks from this does not work for most of the time, but Have You Passed Through This Night? is a mood changer on it's own. Oops mixed the album, i think the best from here which can say a lot about this album is Your Hand in Mine, also girl's seem to like this track a lot xD

@Nick, there is so much to listen to, but i check it out someday. I still have There Will Be Fireworks - The Dark, Dark Bright to check out, have high hopes for it. I liked some of the random tracks i listened so far.

Which album do you prefer the most from those folks?

And minty what you say in your soundoff, the fact that it's unlike explosions is what's making it awesome for me. And if it wasn't an explosions album it'd be fantastic too.

As an aside, yeah The Dark, Dark Bright is a masterpiece and is absolutely the album of theirs to check out.

With regards to The Wilderness. There are things I like a lot about it, but overall it isn't an experience that I really want. It may as well be a different band making it; I think that should be clear to most people. And I DO like music without structure occasionally. I actually think the side-project Inventions is very underrated. But I expect more from Explosions I guess. I was hoping that the album would take me on a journey, rather than just be a random compilation of arbitrary (but some really awesome) sounds.

I think it's much better than Under Summer as far as post rock releases this year goes. Shorter song lengths have done them well and I love the overall larger scope and variety of it.

I had so many awesome comments to make about the Wilderness when I listened last night. Little one-liners to sum up the album. But I can't remember them. Though I genuinely think that "like Inventions but louder" is a very accurate description. The album is like a kid who found loads of cool sounds littered everywhere, and just stuck them together. They're not so much songs as they are collages made by a committee of people who all speak different languages. Here we go, the one-liners are coming out now.

With regards to scope and variety. I actually feel like the album sounds very small in scope. Though I'm not sure why. I guess it's because no element of it hangs around long enough to extend outward a great distance. The elements just stay where they are before fading out and being replaced with new elements. And I don't feel like there is much variety in terms of songwriting approach at all. All the tracks are approached in the same way. But there are enough different sounds that have been splashed onto the album such that you get near the end of t and think "fuck... I've heard a lot of different things throughout this album". That make sense?

I don't think it's just a "collection of sounds." That's all music lol you might as well describe music in general like that. It's just more experimental.

I don't like it as much as Under Summer unfortunately. But then I happen to like my post-rock quite traditional "third-wave". Heck even my own music that I make is traditional "post-the-earth-is-not-a-cold-dead-place" post-rock.

Maybe it does lack focus but its all so well done and I don't think it's amateurish.

I feel like it is just a collection of sounds though. Most music puts sounds together in a very deliberate sequence with the idea of building/maintaining momentum, in a structure that contains refrains and/or progressions that gradually shift between moods. The Wilderness could almost have been randomly generated by putting all the sounds in an algorithm and letting the computer arrange them together. That's an exagerration, yeah, but it helps me make my point. The sequenc of sounds feels almost arbitrary in The Wilderness to me.

You're right though, it is experimental. I'm just not sure I like the experiment they chose to do.

Yeah it's not amateurish. Some of the sounds they make and techniques they use are just beautiful. Genuinely a lot of the album leaves me in awe. It's the lack of focus that prevents it from being great, for me.

I do love some wandering, lacking-of-focus music though. Like I said I realy like Inventions. But I like that because I can relax to it. Wilderness is too loud for me to relax to it. Maybe I need to just turn the volume down on it. Some loud parts impress me though. The 3 tracks surrounding Disintegration Anxiety are very good (the one before it and the one after it).

You know if The Wilderness had completely scrapped track 3, and made track 7 like 5 minutes longer, I would like the album a LOT more. Track 3 imo is pretty horrible, and track 7 is great but only lasts 2 minutes!

Given how samey this band is overall, I found The Wilderness very refreshing to hear. I love the bass line on Disintegration Anxiety.

Also minty if you're talking about Tangle Formations you couldn't be more wrong, that song is straight up beautiful.
