@Jay I love ya bud but even you gotta admit that's a rather reductionist statement and is a -bit- goofy.

Pig Destroyer perfected this type of "poems from the pages of an unhinged madman" style of writing. Never really paid attention to the lyrics here but I would not be surprised if they are way over the top

Yeah I suppose you're right Dedes. Lyricism in metal can be incredibly impactful but that isn't the main focal point imo. Hell for bands like old Pig Destroyer and Cryptopsy that have absolutely incredible lyricism they are hardly decipherable while actually listening to the music and more often than not you have to read into them to even know what they are lol

Should we write off any macabre writers because it’s probably bull shit?

No we should write off bad lyrics for being bad. Prowler in the yard is my favorite album of all time. What I find so offensive about music like this is it takes a truly affective craft and trivializes it

Fucking loser douche bag may have been a little overblown but this just tickled me the wrong way and I was in a bad mood this morning

Lol i'd imagine

Again, I suppose that's where subjectivity comes into play. I've always been greatly into the macabre albeit immensely melodramatic writing style of Brendan, in particular when it actually does land in a personal manner. I literally have "cover me in scars" with the Counterparts yield sign tatted on my shoulder lmao.

Never paid much mind to PD lyrics but I suppose I should. Love Terrifier and Phantom Limb but iirc I wasn't -too- into Prowler when I jammed it years back. Also @Jay also a fair take! I s'pose that comes down to your own value of lyricism and where it applies. I don't give a half a shit about the majority of brutal DM lyrics but when the clarity is there, i.e metalcore/hardcore or things outside of metal spheres in general I find it personally effects my enjoyment on at least a slight level.

I wanna die in a fiery accident
Paramedics arrive and say no point resuscitation
I hope they’re right
Then my parents won’t know I was failing
They’ll blame the driver at fault
And I won’t have to live

I am an embarrassment to myself
To my friends
I am an embarrassment to the world
Til the end

There are plenty of ways to say “my serotonin is fucked up and I wanna to die”

i'd say there's a valid criticism to pretty much any style of writing; even being a fan of lyrics like that one could argue they're on the nose and they'd be right

I'm saying moreso when the foundation of anything you've mostly written is some variant on that, which has basically been the modus operandi of Brendan's lyricism prolly since uhhh The Currents Will Carry Us, however it -does- sometimes seem like there could be some semblance of catering to a brand these days. That kind of betrays my original point tho so it's all pretty speculative.

Also I was reading the lyrics to "Jennifer" lmao jesus fuck is that morbid stuff

"Would you rather have lyrics about kittens, rainbows, and coloring books?"

Honestly I feel like lyrics about kittens over these songs would bang hard. Would be so cute
