Some of the transitions aren't smooth and feel odd.

yeah i mean, this def has sinister riffs. i wasn't saying that it doesn't. but mikael is saying the same about the new record and its getting misinterpreted as "we're bringing the metal back, babyyyyy" and i just wanted to point out that there probably won't be any blast beats and chuggernuts

"Some of the transitions aren't smooth and feel odd."

Understatement of the century right here.

I would like to get further out of their comfort zone.

To be honest this is only really in Mikael's comfort zone (even then I'd hesitate to say that as he's never really done an album quite like this before), both Mendez and Axenrot really push themselves on here, outside of their comfort zone, and as result put in arguably their best and most creative performances.

The drums add so much to this, Axe rules.

I think this is well within Mendez' comfort zone, I think he's always had the groove, and he kind of told Mikael to scrap the old ideas and go in this direction. I would like them to really experiment and have weird sound and vocal effects, etc

Just as long as he riffs as he always does.

Mendez's performance on here is at times different to anything he's done before, that suggests to me that his playing is to some extent out of his comfort zone. Either way he really pushed himself on here to give one of his best ever performances.

I really enjoyed Mendez' performance, the rhythm section is brilliant, but I guess I wasn't surprised because I knew Mendez had this in him. I've always thought of him as a more jazz/groove oriented bassist in a metal band. Anyway I'm looking forward to the next album.
