I saw them last night on the Periphery Tour in STL, as usual they fucking killed it.
These songs are heavy as shit live. They opened with the first three tracks on polar before bringing the fucking house down with "If you've got it at 5 you've got it at 50" and "Memphis". If Periphery weren't such a spectacle NJ would have completely stolen the show, because they were a well-oiled machine and Corey was captivating as usual. His voice sounded incredible and he managed to get multiple circle pits going in a crowd that was clearly there for Periphery and the Contortionist.
God I fucking love this band. I always used to think they were not quite A-tier metalcore, below Unearth and Every Time I Die. That all changed with Meriodinal --> Wrongdoers --> Polar Similar. They are right at the top.

Yeah these guys live is like the best thing ever; such an unstoppable force.

Really? I always thought their first two were the best, excluding the luti-kriss album.

I really felt like they were just biting the coat tails of Botch and weren't fast enough to evolve the way ETID were. Personally I was of the opinion that the Chariot was more consistent up until Meridional (though NJ had some undeniable high point tracks as mentioned previously), at which time NJ really found their niche.

really should have caught them in reading with periphery, but I think periphery sucks and didn't know they'd play a decently long set

I'm not a huge periphery fan either, but they are kind of the *it* band of this generation and they were quite the spectacle live.

I'd love to see NJ live. On record, they are one of my fave bands so I expect I'd enjoy their live show immensely.

yeah in retrospect I can't really justify passing it up given how popular periphery is.

For what it's worth, I'd pay to see them on their own. Also, Misha is a solid dude.
Confessed2005 - yeah I mean....if you enjoy things that fucking rule you'll have fun.

if you play songs from this back to back with songs from wrongdoers, the production is noticeably worse. sounds way too dense and loud where as wrongdoers lets things breathe a lot more.

Best place to start with Norma Jean? My point of reference is 'The Chariot's One Wing' being awesome.

Thanks, yeah Scogin left NJ for The Chariot & as this is a recent NJ record he can't be on it presumably, someone more knowledgeable may be able to clarify exactly what happened...

Yeah, pretty sure he just decided to part ways. Don't know if he came back or something (hence the "I think"), but I'm pretty positive he didn't. Regardless, this is a good point to start with Norma Jean. Only problem is that it's kinda downhill from here in that this is their best album. Still a pretty solid band, though.

Amicable split. They are all good friends and have toured together since. Similar vocal style anyway and Cory, the guy that took over, is fantastic.
You can start wherever, the only album I don't care much for is Anti-Mother; Redeemer and Bless the Martyr are my favorites.

Almost every album of theirs is worth listening to aside from anti-mother. They're all fairly similar in quality, but each have their own feel. Redeemer for life, but this one pretty much matched it pound for pound. The other one I return to a fair bit is Wrongdoers.
